    1999 Tacoma 2.7L 4x4
Bought a 1999 2.7 4x4 a month ago. Research on TacomaWorld led up to it.

Best-running truck of ten checked out before purchase (via Craigslist). But...

...driving home from the seller’s house, the charging system light comes on. Next day, it doesn't start. Check battery. Battery holds a charge. I get an alternator and put it in. Charging light no longer illuminates. Nice.

A week later the engine light comes on. I get under the truck and check the exhaust system for leaks. Nope. I check all vacuum hoses. I replace an old, cracking one. Nope. I do some research on TW. Aha, 1st generation Tacomas are prone to an exhaust manifold crack. Yep, the manifold is cracked — a crack so long it covers nearly the whole thing from top to bottom. So, exhaust manifold ordered. But not the crappy oem part that cracks at will.

Next, what’s that overwhelming pine smell that’s been nauseating me when driving the thing? I check the interior. Under one of the seats is a weird rubber thing about a foot in diameter. It’s a huge scent disc no doubt intended to cover the exhaust smell entering the cabin from the manifold crack. The nice seller who “puts only Mobil One, the very best oil” in his cars is a bastard. Further evidence of this: another light has happily, merrily illuminated itself — safety restraint system. Airbags. Good luck troubleshooting a system purpose-built to explode something into your face. I’m hoping it’s just a loose wire.

But I'm still happy. I love my truck. The repairs only strengthen the bond.
