From what I remember and understand, you can install a newer motor into an older chassis with all the smog crap from the newer motor and would have to get it inspected and signed off by a referee.

Yeah I’ve read that as well and seen some success stories. Been a dream for a while and seems like the perfect time (donor wise). Should be able to make the money I’d invest into the 1st gen back from parting the 99. Just seeing if anyone has ever done that swap or anything like it in a Toyota.

Not enough to have a build thread.
This is right. Can't go older, only newer, and will need EVERYTHING smog related for the newer engine. has to be stock from the maf sensor to the oxygen sensors

I think there is a few other rules you need to follow. Like the new moyor has to be from a like model snd within so maney yrs of the old one. Its alot of paperwork at first but once its done no big deal.

    Some really cool shit

When my 94 4Runner lost a head gasket I talked with my long time mechanic about an engine swap to a 3.4, and he said don't do it. Royal pain in the ass with California smog regs. That was the end of that. You could probably do it, but it'll cost you and arm and a leg.

Sometimes mechanics can be real Debbie downers. I know i have a few in my life.
I also know a few that have done swaps. And the paperwork will be a pain in the ass, but once its done its done. It's not like your trying to put a supercharged v8 in it ,although its possible. I worked with a guy that put a v8 from a ford lighting in a ford Courier. All street legal with smog. He sad the paperwork was the hardest part.

Experiences may vary. Mine with my mechanic is that he looks out for my wallet, which is why I've used him for 15 years. In my particular case, it wasn't a good move. Mechanically, it's feasible. It'll be a pain in the ass, and costly, and, as you stated, a bitch when it comes to getting it registered. Anything is possible if you bring bags of money.

This place looks pretty cool. I like how they put a bottle opener on a drill guide so its not just a one use tool.

Ive done a v8 swap in an S10 and LS (6.0) from 99+Chevy pu into 92 Chevy pickup
1 the motor has to be larger that the original motor (displacement)
2 it has to be from the same class of vehicle (you can’t swap a car motor to a truck/or truck to a car, and the BAR referee may or may not check the vin on the motor to verrify)
3 you must use the smog equipment that came with the newer vehicle, they even wanted a functional Obd2 port, some vehicles require a fuel tank swap because of extra return fuel lines and charcoal canister
The hardest part is the wiring to keep everything the motor needs from smog compliance
This is just what I remember off hand you would probably want to check the BARs website to see current regs
