seat loose at pivot. Common issue?

My driver seat has some play in its pivot. I'm able to rock the seat-back about 1" forward from my recline position. The passenger seat back is rock solid.

Is this a common issue? If so, where is the looseness?

 

I started out with the exact same problem...soon you won't be able to recline your seat at all...if you find out how to fix it...let me know...I pulled my seat apart trying to figure out what the problem is but only ended up snaping a couple bolts...

There is a spring mechanism behind the little plastic piece behind the recliner lever that gets stretched and then snaps and fails.

 

the rockin movement I'm experiencing right now doesn't seem to be tied to a spring. I don't feel any tension.. it just feels like a the seat back is loosely attached to a bracket or something..

 

mine is tight and i wont mention all the use/abuse it has seen. i have never heard of this problem b4

 

There are 2 brackets on each side of the seat...one of the bolts is loose causing the play...if not fixed soon the the bolt will eventually work itself loose which will put stress on the other bolts and parts...

 

My passenger side is loose at the pivot...

 

Is there an exploded diagram of the seat internal?

Are the brackets along the seat back or the seat bottom?

Thanks.. but from seeing the parts list I still don't know which parts you are talking about... It also doesn't seem to show the whole seat. Only the bottom seat assembly..

 

Section Index 1440 the bracket between 3 & 5 and yes you are correct it doesnt show the whole seat assm...but its the only exploded parts view I could find on the net...There's one more bracket on each side above this...

 

I know this is old but there’s 2 bolts on each side of the seat (12mm) that I just tighten up that seemed to fix the problem.

 

i wonder if my various passengers over the years have put stress wear and tear on those bolts always wanting to recline and sleep while I am driving. As far as my driver seat problem i have no clue what is going on yet and how to fix it

 

Yeah, Im not sure how it happens but I got tired of hearing that thing squeak and rattle every time I hit a bump

 

Not "2 bolts on each side of the seat", but 2 bolts for each seat, with one bolt on each side of the seat. Tightening exactly those two bolts really, really tight eliminated the "play" in my seatback. The inboard bolts (at center console) may be a little difficult to access and tighten.

 

The spring mechanism on the passenger seat of an XtraCab springs the seatback forward so passengers may enter and exit the rear compartment. It also returns the seatback from the reclining position, and that spring provides the resistance you feel when you recline the seatback. There is a CABLE that fails, but the spring is likely still working. The cable controls a mechanism that simultaneously springs the seatback forward and moves the seat far forward. That is the ideal situation for passengers entering/exiting the rear compartment. Most such cables on most extracabs have failed, and new replacements cannot be obtained anywhere. The seatback will still spring forward, and using the lever under the front of the seat allows back and forward adjustment of the whole seat, but without the cable they remain totally separate operations.

Tightening the two 12 mm bolts did the trick.

 

i suppose i eventually discovered the problem and partially alleviated it a wee bit after about 10k miles of the most excruciating hellacious driving experience i believe i have ever had
still not sure why they were unable to find where the squeak was coming from
