100K Maintenance Priorities

How many gallons does the whole radiator system hold?

 

Hmm per my Haynes 2005-2009 book:
Cooling System:
I-4: 9.1 QRTS (8.7 LTRS)
V6
Auto Trans: 10.1 QRTS (9.6 LTRS)
Manual: 10.3 QRTS (9.7 LTRS)
I purchased three of the large jugs while at the dealership

 

Both flushes for 250 doesn't seem expensive. the tranny shop here wants to charge me 150 just to drop the pan and refill

 

Whatever you do, avoid the dealership for any maint. type work. Do it yourself or go to a good independent shop.

The dealer will "upsell" you and in some cases will not do some of the work you were charged for or not do the work correctly.

 

Man I never really thought much about an radiator flush. Just got through reading a thread about the importance of it and yes I will be doing this in the near future.

 

Radior flush every 100k
Differential fluids every 30k
Trans flush every 100k
Power steering when the fluid looks horrible
Brake fluid when it looks bad or every second brake change.
Spark plugs every 30k if you use copper (stock) every 100k if you use irridum.

You can very easily do the spark plugs and differentials yourself.

The radiator and trans are worth paying a shop to do.

Avoid the dealership

 

Do you use the Haynes book much?

 

Oh for sure!! I bought it a day after I bought the truck. I read it on the toilet to understand things I have no clue about, mainly in the motor rebuild section.

But 95% of the methods I use come from there, but I check here too because people have found shortcuts and ways to make things easier.

 

I hav 102500 on my 09. Set up apt. to get trans. fluod change for today . Get there and all 3 service writers say no to fluid change and or flush since my transmition is a World Standard Transmition this document was provided to me by Fred Anderson Toyota. And they were very adament about not flushing or changing fluid in a automatic transmition. I also have a lifetime powertrain guarantee.

 

I think that's rubbish...just my opinion

Ahh the age old "lifetime fluid" or "lifetime gasket". What this really means is that you don't change the fluid until the "lifetime" of the fluid has been met. Lifetime does NOT mean for the life of the vehicle. I hate when companies put the term lifetime when it's not accurate.

It turns out that my manual actually does not call for a transmission fluid replacement. Driverside.com also does not include this in their 105000-mile maintenance list. Now I'm going to do the coolant flush instead.

 

Oh I know what you mean ,I'm not disputing anything. But I did ask what do you mean lifetime and was told the lifetime of the vehicle as you say.
So I say what exactly do you mean the lifetime of the vehicle,how long is that lifetime?

Service writer is the person you see when you check in to Stealership and they write up what you want done to your vehicle and they are your contact while in the shop. Maybe they have other names for them these days.

I get the SoCal prices thing! But that still seems like a decent price for the service (assuming this trusted shop did everything properly). I only say that because... they "flushed" your manual transmission? Seems odd.

All fluids eventually wear and/or age to the point of needing replacement. This is especially true for vehicles with any severe service. Even power steering fluid needs replacement at some point, assuming the vehicle stays on the road for a long time. Will the truck break down if certain fluids are not replaced? Not necessarily, but it is cheap insurance -- much cheaper than replacing a failed component. You've hit 100,000 miles so take this as a strong suggestion to service your transmission, or at least freshen up the fluid (drain/fill).

 

DGXR. Thanks for your advice. I talked to the dealership today and they said they change out tacoma trann fluid at 120k. I will do coolant now and then do the transmission fluid at 120k

 

That's the million dollar question! It's super vague and many people want definitive time frames for vehicle services. I know I do.
