Once my dad pays off my moms car ( 06 Rav4 ) my dad will be purchasing a tacoma! first he said " well i dont need the power of a v6" but... i talked him into wanting one . I really want him to get the TRD offroad version with the hood scoop and towing stuff, im not that informed on how they are better than pre-runners... but, u best believe his getting speedway blue! so, what would yall suggest he gets? it will be mostly for hauling to dump, groceries, driving to the boat ( never hauling the boat ) and vacationing ( suit cases )...

well the sport is the one with the hood scoop and prerunner is a 2wd with 4wd suspension. and a trd off road means it comes with bilstein suspension and a locker

Yea, you need to review the package options online.

Case in point, I have a PreRunner TRD Off-Road. It's 2wd, has a e-locker, and no hood scoop....

Though, regardless of what he gets, it'll be a nice truck :D

Wrong and wrong ;)....there are base model 6 lugs also... I have a V6, Double Cab, 4x4, Non-SR5, Non-TRD, it is a base model..they have the same set-up in a prerunner also.

There are a few of them on this site, pics in these threads...

OP...you want a TRD Sport which comes either as a Prerunner (2wd) or 4x4. The Prerunner comes in Automatic, the 4x4 is Auto or Manual. The TRD Sport is also available in either the Access Cab or the Double Cab, not regular cab.

Your in Maryland, get the 4x4, (as stated above) regardless of which model.

The prerunner would leave you disappointed in the snow.

Just another difference between the OR and the sport TRD packages, the Sport has a LSD (limited slip differential) instead of an e-locker.

i've got a sport and am REALLY happy with it so far (have had it for 2-3 months). i don't go offroad much, so the TRD OR seemed cool, but nothing i would use day today.
as for 4x4, same applied, i live in Augusta, GA, and we rarely get snow, so the better MPG's sounded better to me ;)

    Just to clarify.....

ALL NEW tacomas (I think 2009+) have the AUTO LSD - which is a limited slip operated via the brakes (not a mechanical LSD inside the diff).

The 2005-2008 models have the mechanical LSD which is no longer available.
