Noise from headliner

Anyone else experiencing a noise from the headliner when driving over rough roads?
Not so much a rattle but more like paper being rubbed together. I know it sounds silly but its driving me nuts.

Sounds like its coming from the front near the windshield.

 

could it be one of the many cheap plastic tabs Toyota uses that has come loose, and rolling about?
Does it only sound so while driving over bumps and such, or does it happen on even roads as well?
I don't know.... I mean, it's a truck afterall. Not a Lexus.

 

There are some wires glued to the headliner up there forward of the console, they may be loose. Pull off the console and check the bundle on the driver's side of of the hole and in front near the windshield. Funny same thing happend on my 2nd gen.
Cable bundle rattling against headliner at about 2k rpm with moderate engine load. Drove me nuts

Same problem with mine too. That paper rubbing / scratchy noise made me crazy while driving. Basically, I spent 4 hours trying to hunt down the exact spots where the headliner was rubbing the black framing portion of the windshield. It appeared to me that the headliner was too large and was rubbing against the windshield near both A pillars.

Additionally, my headliner, behind the sunroof was making a rattling noise on bumpy roads or when closing the doors.

To fix all of the noise issues I removed the A, B and C pillar trim, sun visors, oh shit handles, rear seat clothes hooks and overhead console, dropping the headliner. I then went to the local craft store and purchased adhesive backed black felt sheets and adhesive backed black foam sheets. I cut 1 inch felt strips and place those on the black windshield framing, which, can't be seen from the inside or outside. I then placed the 6 foam sheets on top of the egg crate looking things that are attached to the headliner. Basically, the adhesive foam sheets are between the egg crate things and the sheet metal roof. Reinstalled everything and all headliner noises are completely gone. The entire project outlined above took me about 4 hours to complete and cost me $7 in materials. Labor is a different story.

My issue was a noise when driving on any road condition. It sounded like it was coming from the upper console. It didn't matter if it was a super smooth road or offroad, it always made it. To me it sounding like a static/rattling noise. Took my truck in 2 weeks ago for the dealer to check out. They figured out what it was (loose reinforcement bar in roof I believe they said) and said it would be a 2 day repair, well 2 days turned into 2 weeks. Actually went to pick up my truck finally tonight and when I got in it was dead, the general sales manager apologized and had someone jump it.

After that I proceed to get in the truck and realize my front seat is messed up. Felt like you were sitting on a stool that was not even and was rocking back and forth. Obviously i was extremely mad at this point and they offered to keep it overnight and fix the seat first thing in the morning, detail the truck for free, and personally deliver it to me tomorrow.

And BTW if anyone has them fix this expect your interior to be gutted. I went by to get some stuff out of it when they told me it was gonna be longer than 2 days and they had all the seats out of it, headliner out, pillars out, center console out (This is why my seat was messed up probably). They said they had to take all of that out to get the headliner out of the vehicle since it is so large. So good luck to you all if you get this fixed and hopefully your experience is much better than mine.

Probably a bad idea to let a chimp try to fix it - ack!

This is why I wouldn’t buy a confiscated car from a homeland security auction - I’ve heard very bad stories about missing critical parts under the panels.

 

I have had the same issue with my 2018. I have been chasing a noise for 6 months. I thought it was the dash. When ever the truck "flexes" going over a bump or out of a driveway I get a loud snap! Then I get a ticking sound every time I hit even a minor bump. I finally traced it to the headliner at the front windshield where the mirror attaches. The liner seems to be made of thin brittle plastic covered in material. If you touch it near the sun glass holder you will hear the snap. I have not taken it to the dealer yet as I only have 6000 miles in it. I used some round foam strips to fit between the window and the liner at the front and this helped but it is not a permanent fix.
I leases this truck and I will not buy another. I had a 2015 and it was a far superior vehicle. This generation is nothing but cheap plastic crap. And don't get me started about the "searching for a gear" 6 speed transmission. I have about 2 years on the lease and after that it will be GONE!

 

I found my rattle noise yesterday after 2 years of driving. Pulled down the roof console that houses sunglasses and has the front to dome lights. Found a metal retainer thegoes Tound both side and the front windshield size. On the
He passenger side the original “adhesive” front the factory was undone. Took a tube of E 6000 Transparent Glue (from Michaels Crafts, Home Depot, Lowe’s). Applied to metal braket., use spring clamps to hold in place against the headliner. I let it dry...set-up for two hours. Drove my truck around and over some rough roads.....noise was gone! Reinstalled the roof console. NO MORE NOISE of a rattle.
