3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

So mine went like this.
1. Brought it there they claimed it was normal
2. Brought it back claimed it was damaged replaced it (took 27 days for parts and it was a non recall diff leak truck)
3. Brought it back they claimed it was again normal (that took them 1 week to conclude this)
4. Brought it back last night they said it was damaged accornding to their drive and chassis ear diagnosis and they were ordering parts (no paperwork since I was supposed to go back tomorrow)
5. Corporate called today said they were not replacing it and I needed to meet the field engineer person Monday for them to diagnose it.

I assume that is so they can say it's normal and dismiss it.

Idk what an attempt counts as. Dismissing the issue as normal seems like they are disregarding it and it wouldn't be considered an attempt. I really just want them to fix it. Seems weird they are trying to avoid it like the plague

I just changed my vote to no. It was doing it but I haven't really noticed it and yesterday I was listening for it. Couldn't hear it anymore. Only thing I've done is change fluid.

 

What kind of fluid? Thanks.

 

Interesting. What weight did you go with. The factory stuff literally feels like the mineral oil that is used in my mountain bike hydraulic disks brakes haha.

 

I really want them to resolve it. Either way I'm going to lose. Georgia has a 7% title tax which you avoid by trading a vehicle and paying the difference in value. With a buyback it's like going to the dealer with nothing so I will pay in taxes what I may lose trading. Unfortunately there isn't anything out there to really trade for. Full size trucks are too cumbersome to drive everyday and explore in the mountains with.

 

Trade assist even for another one. They do not have to label it a Lemon and you get a new truck. Win/win for all (unless the new truck does the same thing). But, to get Toyota to do this you will likely have to start the LL process. All I want is mine fixed too as there is nothing else out there that appeals to me.

We keep hearing that but where are they? LOL. I think Toyota has some concerns with the upcoming competition and I expect the Ranger to have far more powerful engine options but wonder if they will really bring an off-road worthy competitor. I hear they have a Ranger Raptor but Ford really got caught with their pants down in the midsize market. Midsize trucks have been selling like hot cakes and they only have fullsize offerings. The Taco really needs an engine north of 300 hp to keep up but we all know that. In the end competition makes everything better so I’m hoping Toyota responds in kind sooner than later. I am disappointed that we still have the 278 hp version of the 3.5 and had hoped for a power bump for 18.

 

I've had a couple of Rangers and they did me well. I totally agree with the " Pants Down" thoughts with Ford. I absolutely have no use or want for a full sized truck. They're just too big, and I have nothing that big to tow. Had a great time with my 06 Taco and with the slim offerings in the mid-size truck market, I didn't even drive my 16 SR5 before I bought it. To me, just no other games in town. So far my Tacoma has been great with none of the issues reported here. If I thought about something else, I would definitely take a look at the new Rangers. No way I'd go GM or Nissan.

I think Toyota sales rely a little more heavily on resale value compared to other brands. People buy Toyota knowing that if there is a problem they won't lose as much if they need to dump the truck, it's a safety blanket almost.

If Toyota starts coming out with major power upgrades, at or near the same price point, only a few years into new generations it will kill resale for those that own the underpowered engine option.

If Toyota loses the "buying for best in class resale" business, it could take an even more negative turn for them.

They excel at the simple, stable and reliable business model. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they absolutely bombed the engine choice for the 3rd gen. They could have done so much better and maintained the same MPG's. But, unless they change their business model, they are kind of stuck with it until the next generation rolls around.

 

On another note. My drain plug had a piece of cast from the differential housing stuck on the drain plug. The independent shop pointed this out to me. Not sure if it means much. But Toyotas quality control is lacking if they allow fragments and foreign object debris to remain inside the housing when setup. Potentially damaging the pinion bearing as large filings and shavings are floating in the fluid.

I was told it looks like a thin piece of cast from when the third member holes were drilled..

 

i'm just saying... not white knighting because my truck has its share of problems... but the ford Ranger was always a garbage truck, disposable and cheaply made. It was fine for what it was, but it was never in a league with Toyotas. Look how many older Rangers are out there today vs Toyotas. Say what you will about the current issues. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high on it.

Does anyone have an actual story of getting their howl FIXED? this thread seems like its just so much noise... curious if anyone has gotten a real resolution.

 

They tried that with me too. I instructed the dealer to keep the corporate guys far away from my truck and they did.

 

I agree with you, especially on the engine choices. I’m not a power junkie so the power of the truck is ok for me but the tranny tuning is not. However, the market is different now and others have dared challenge Toyota and people are taking note. The Tacoma will continue to sell well but Ford knows how to build and sell trucks as well so look for them to get a nice chunk of sales.

I have been driving Tacos for a while too and the truck is far more refined than ever. It is better is so many ways yet worse in others (quality). However, Toyota needs to be careful marketing the luxury and refinement aspect of this truck (especially the quietness) and then when problems arise or when the competition offers more, trying to fall back on excelling at the simple game won’t cut it. I hope some of these uncharacteristic issues get worked out but have been around long enough to know that there are many others out there with these trucks with zero issues. I just wish mine was one of them. Take the howling rear diff away and my truck is problem free. Peace and best of luck.

 

I disagree because the Jeep jk also has awesome resale 2nd to the Tacoma and the crap 3.8 version ones still sell for way too much like the Tacoma.

 

Yes the howling diff. My power seems a bit better after taking a long trip up in the mountains. I worked the engine hard (as it should be capable of) and it feels better with power. Maybe I broke in more or something or the transmission learned better
