Yes. A contractor friend said "they used to build them like that so there would be some give in the board, to make it more comfortable to walk on". Crazy. I fixed the section that broke with a new 2x6 and used a section of the old board to give it strength; I screwed it perpendicular to the boards, underneath, half way between the joists. In the pic it's in the middle. Figured when 1 board was stepped on it would share the load with the adjoining boards. Just a guess but it actually worked. Eventually I'd like to replace the deck with a stone patio...

Here is a cross section of the old board after I cut it. The lines are from the SS screws. I don't know when the deck was built but more than 15 years ago.

I'm supposed to build a deck this coming summer but I'm thinking a horseshoe pit and disc golf putt course is more important. We'll see.

Yeah, Heart redwood is amazing. I had to replace another board a couple years ago and when I cut it, it was like brand new (except for the grey patina on the outside). Bugs don't bother it, sun/rain doesn't kill it. Too bad it's such a limited and expensive resource.

That’s how my deck was built, posts at 4’ on center with 2x10s on either side of post, then 2x6 decking. It’s basically pier and beam with no floor joists. I am in the process of removing the deck, it’s a death trap for anyone over 250 lbs.

Yikes! If I had that kind of clearance under mine I'd add more joists. I have about 10 inches. Of course, if I had that much clearance the result of the guy stepping through would have been very bad. I imagine 300 pounds falling on an adjacent board might just go through. Long way down!

I removed the lower part already, it was about 12” above grade. They also didn’t flash the ledger at the house, it rotted the siding. I knew when I bought the house that I’d be removing the deck. DIY gone wrong.

Um, if you got no joists (#87655) then you got no ledger... I wouldn't even really call that a deck, sorry.

'course, there appears to maybe be a shitload of wood there you can use for something else... tear that thing out and start over before a) somebody gets hurt b) your homeowners agent sees it

somebody should really throw a class action suit against Lowes and the DIYNetwork - half the shit they sell can't actually be used by Joe Homeowner if one considers building codes, permit requirements, design licensure rules, trade unions, etc. Don't get me wrong I'm not really serious, but if you constantly tell a pack of monkeys they can fly the space shuttle and keep giving them rocket fuel they'll eventually give it a try. (..not you, the Homer that built the thing)

and... it's labor intensive, but: excavate about a foot, cut all that shit into 1' hunks, start standing them on end and packing them in there, sweep in a couple bags of the sawdust, hit it with the hose. Nice set of steps up to the door.

There are still a lot of 200 year old streets under the streets in NYC, Pittsburgh, Phila....
