Yep - ordered everything 3 pulleys, belt, tensioner. I'm just going to replace the pulley on the tensioner - from what I read there is no need to replace the tensioner unless the shaft is bad. Hopefully its not bad but with my luck it is...

That little black stub used to have a pulley on it...

Pulley ate its bearings for breakfast and the wheel jumped off of the shaft.

Summed up perfectly. Thankfully I have the skid plate - it caught it otherwise the civic that was behind me the whole ride into work would have had a rude awakening...

 

The entire tensioner arm? Isn't it a bitch?

 

I dont know about the v6 but the 4 cyl is cake. I've done the water pump and islets/tensioner multiple times

 

Yeah, that's always a surprise.

What's your plan for getting home? Crossing your fingers that the belt holds up, or are you going to pull the shaft and nut and hope there's enough tension that the belt doesn't slip off? Unless I'm mistaken that's just an idler, so theoretically you could make it home without it.

Not that uncommon. Modern vehicles are sound insulated well enough that people don't really hear the pulleys going bad until the bearings are REALLY bad. I used to see a couple of missing idlers a month when I worked at a shop. People who don't open their hoods would come in because their belts were squealing, though. Or they'd come in on the hook because the belt had disappeared and their car had died.

 

Well I drove at least 10 miles with it like that.. I'm about 6 miles from my shop so I might drive there and leave the truck there overnight until the parts come in tomorrow AM.

I replaced my tensioner pulley, not the whole arm. It was holding tension just fine. Made a world of difference. It's so quiet now!

On the 4.0, the tensioner assembly is a pain in the dick. Gotta remove the AC compressor.

It's a PITA on the 4.0 V6. As Alex stated, you have to remove the compressor and I'm pretty sure it's hard piped so you run the risk of breaking lines / fittings. I bought the whole assemble when I did them for my Tacoma also, took one look at that mess and only replaced the pulley. You have to remove the A/C compressor because it's bolted to the tensioner base. So the compressor has to be removed before you can get at the tensioner bolts. I'd just replace the pulley and be done with it.

 

Yea i can see that being a pain. The 4cyl you have to take the alternator out. Then when you zap yourself and burn the skin off it really blows. Ask me how I know (only happened once)

 

Y U no disconnect battery?!

 

Cause I'm lazy when it comes to having to tune my radio and get the sub working again. Only did it once cause i was rushing out if the 4 times I've pulled the alternator. Tuning and such takes me about an hour and I have never really had issues leaving the battrty connected

 

Fair enough. I always disconnect mine, but I'm old school. Plus I'm never in a huge rush because I've got another vehicle I can use instead.

 

I wrote down all of my radio settings before disconnecting the battery when I did my last tune up. When my original battery was on it's way out, I swapped it with a new one while the truck was running just to avoid losing my radio settings though.
