Yup my dad is a supervisor for Caltrans and there are a lot of days where I double or triple his income. But I have to travel and my benefits aren't as good but based on how much I make at times I can afford to compensate for poorer benefits. The two days I worked in "the city" this week my total hourly rate was over $90 an hour.

Some of the stories I hear from my dad working for the state I don't know how you guys do it. It's absolutely insane the crap and politics you guys have to deal with.

If you're gonna do the apprenticeship program for an electrician, do the union one. Way better pay, way better benefits, way more work,just my 2 cents. Im a local 6 electrician, work in sf.

I went through a non union aprentiship and they are just as good. And most of them work alot harder then union workers now if your in the bay area or The fucking "city" as you quirs call it. Ibew all the way. They control all the work down there. Well 90% of it anyway. There is good with both. All the hacks i have seen never went through an apprentiship. They were granfathered in before that became a standard. Or lied there way in. We have a few of those at my shop. Most are retired or retiring soon. Thankfully.
I would of went IBEW if work was better when i started. But it was slow, yet i never saw a lay off being non union, mean while the local 340 had over 300 electrical workers on the list waiting for work. As an electrician you will never be without work. One way or another.

 

How much vacation pay do you get and company vehicle or no?

I know my company isn't the norm but I get 3 weeks paid vacation, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as 9 paid holidays, and a 401k I have full control of. Phone is paid for plus company vehicle and gas card. Pretty damn good for non union better than most locals I know of.

In the last 5 years I've had less than 5 days off due to being slow and those weren't consecutive.

Both have their pros and cons but I wouldn't say one is better than the other unless you are onlygoung to work in the city limits of San Francisco

 

Worked as a part of a team that project managed a lot of TI work (our own). We would very occasionally hire non-union for a time constrained project. I wasn't kidding about the conduit thing. That and just sloppy ass work. We'd end up have do-overs on almost every one of those jobs. Rarely on our union work. So a decent apprenticeship means a lot to me-oh, you can have poor workmanship with union guys too but they're usually the last to go out.

 

So what does one of these apprenticeships usually pay? I'm kind of tired of dealership BS. Thinking about moving to a large fleet company or a different trade altogether. And if electricians make that kind of bank....

 

A lot of factors involved but 60-70k and up is realistic torwards the end of an apprenticeship and that's just gross pay not 401k contributions or benefits. Plus that's not counting overtime.

1st year apprentices are probably around upper 30ks lower 40s but like I said lots of factors here
