Can these be purchased bare, as in no powdercoat?

EDIT: Answered my own question with a search.
That sucks, no plate for me. :(

    Free bump.

Will a can or bottle of (soda) fit between the ribs flat? The stock plastic is terrible for setting your drink down it’s always gotta be placed right in the center of a rib

It doesnt fit between the ribs. Most guys buy the ribbed plate for using dirt bikes or quads. The smooth one is better for table top.

You don't need to, but I would highly recommend you do. The cost isn't that much compared to the part itself, and you will really like having you. You will be surprised with how little support there actually is under that OEM skin. I would also highly recommend you invest in a rivnut tool, I have gone in and changed out all the plastic clips under the hood with rivnuts and it looks fire, not to mention no more fighting not breaking those plastic clips. I've used the rivnuts on my bed rack as well, the applications are endless and the tool makes it a breeze to install. Pick it up at harder freight for cheap.

does anyone know hardware upgrade kit dimensions
the kit that used to be available from Mobtown?
it replaces the stock weak hardware with nutserts and bolts

I'm guessing rounded allen bolts, flat washer, spring washer
I already have a bag of 1/4 nutserts that I believe is the right one. Just not the bolts and stuff
if nobody knows, I'll put the nutserts in and go to a hardware store to see what fits in the parking lot before getting total quantity
and/or poke a digital caliper in to measure depth as an alternate method

torx might actually be more strip resistant than regular allen

also, does anyone know how the old inserts get removed? White/yellow plastic, the fragile ones

I have a full wraparound Relentless flat skin (not pictured) but the stock mounting is definitely an issue.
    -some are stripped
-it doesn't hold tight. There's a limit to how much torque the plastic thread can take
-it ends up loosening over time on it's own, shaking and preventing close of tailgate requiring re tightening

Hopefully with nutserts, bolts would line up and not need boring/reaming/widening of the Relentless skin holes to allow for line-up. Ran into that with aftermarket engine skid plate before.

    like so:

    figured it out kind of.
    Hardware store got all stainless
1/4-20 Allen cap bolts 1” long
    Split lock washers
    Flat washers

couple bolts didn’t want to line up but oh well.
Pulled out the old plastic inserts by hand. Put in a kit of 1/4-20 rivet nuts from Amazon.

I think the next size up was 1 1/4” which looked too long. Next size down 3/4” looked too short.

Stuck a sample 1” bolt with washers underneath from the backside to visually confirm it went fully through everything without protruding too much.

Seems held on much better now.
other option would’ve been Torx Plus that allows tighter and less strip prone. But it doesn’t need to be that tight with that many bolts. Torx plus would require buying and storing an additional bit instead of basic L wrenches that everyone already keeps.

so if I had to guess what the Mobtown hardware kit would’ve used, probably 1” length bolts.
    IMG_4069.jpg

any extra work could have potentially:
-countersunk the relentless panel holes to use more flush bolts
-bore out all the holes just a little bit wider to make line up easier

but the panel has been powder coated and I didn’t want to mess around with disturbing it and touch up painting.

black oxide might have looked better but I don’t know if it’s as corrosion-proof and don’t want it turning into ugly rust.

took off the aluminum flat bar I had on top for securing a full bed rug I no longer have. It was nice having that piece of silver to see in the rearview into the bed and know for sure my tailgate was closed as added measure.
But there’s probably other ways to do that like putting a colored piece of tape.

maybe the difficulty lining up some bolts was due to powder coat thickness. Or the fact the tailgate wasn’t designed to use rivnuts with less forgiving tolerance than a weak piece of plastic.
Tiny bit of boring out every hole would likely not cause any issue securing as the flat washers still have enough width to clamp.
