06 with new frame, where else would rust be a problem

I'm considering going to look at a 06 AC 4x4 OR V6, 217K miles, that just got a new frame two weeks ago. The Toyota dealer bought this truck at auction then also immediately got the new frame. Even with the new frame, which would indicate rust perforation on the old one, are there other possible rusted areas that remain as significant problems? Are there other frame attachments than could be rusted that did not get replaced, such as control arms. Where else should I look? This truck was not from a NE or other rust prone area, but it could have traveled anywhere.

They usually replace the other badly rusted parts when doing the frame swap because most of it had to come off anyway. That being said, they may not have....check the leaf spring brackets, shocks and UCA/LCAs, ball joints, gas tank, etc for rust.

2006 models seem to have a high rate of head gasket failures.

Just a heads up. Search will reveal more threads/info. I think someone was trying to start a class action lawsuit.

Thanks for that. I reviewed the 06 HG issue, which may explain why there are so many 06's for sale now my area in that possibly problematic mileage range.

Check the rear axle R&P cover, they can rust out and weep gear oil.

These trucks are notorious for running a long time but 217k miles on a 2006 would maybe keep me away from buying it. But, assuming you're getting it at a fair price I would go over it with a fine tooth comb before purchasing. If you're not up for climbing around underneath it or don't know what to look for, I would maybe spend $100 and have it inspected from a reputable shop in the area, if there is one.

I hadn't noticed that I switched the mileage numbers in my original post, it's 127K, not 217K. Even so, I've decided to anty-up more money and look for a post '11 truck. I've gained a wealth of knowledge on TW and as a result have come to realize the risks and what to look out for.

The rockers seem to be problematic on the rust belt Tacomas. You would see rust on the pinch weld and rust color seeping from the rocker plugs.

I'm in New England and the 2nd owner for a 2006 Ex Cab - bought it with 30k on the ticker - at 110 now.

My frame got replaced 2 years ago - the body is minty accept some hail damage. Underneath is rusted up pretty good - axles and hardware, etc. It's pretty dramatic when you see the shiny frame but it's not a big deal. I keep an eye on things when I go get my LOF at the shop.

If I were you I'd crawl under with a light and snoop around good.

If you don't mind, what's the dealer asking?

Your reply is what I've been thinking; new frame but rusted everywhere else, and also maybe rusted in places you can't see. Since I've been studying 06 models, the more problem I see, but it's common for people to report their problems, whereas those without don't bother to give their satisfaction. It's a v6 4x4 OR AC AT 127K, dealer asking $16K, this is in western NC, where Tacomas seem to be more on the high end. I've decided to put in more money and move up to at least a '11. I would prefer to find a one owner well cared for truck, not at a dealer.

For reference I bought my 2005 a.c. Trd off road and got a new frame also with similar miles 212k (kM So 130k miles) for $6000. My rocker panels at the rear are rotten, but that's a cheap fix. That's $4750 USD $6000 cad)

Thanks for the feedback - I bought mine in '10 for 18...an ex cab, 4x4, 4 cyl, lowish miles - since added a frame and some light (no return) mods.

I love my truck and will run it until it is no longer feasible to do so - I have no electric windows or any of that crap - it's 4 cyl, manual model - fully acoustic.
I fear something in the drive train will fail before the body or frame at this point - If I let it...
