Rear Differential Oil change

Hello!
Thank you for any help,I have a 2011 Toyota Tacoma double cab pre runner 4.0 v6 2w drive,I wanted to change my rear differential gear oil,I was wanting to know what kind to use or what do you guys use,I seen in my book it said 75-85 gear oil,The last think is does anyone have a part number for the crush gaskets i would need to replace the old ones from the drain plugs?Thank you so much!!I did see this oil,was not sure if this would be the one.

you can use that Mobil 1 and it works just fine. you also don't need new crush washers. only get them if you want to. they usually work fine for a couple of changes be fore they start to leak.

 

Get any 80w-90 gear oil and call it a day

Don't skimp on crush washers, they're cheap and you can get them at your dealership parts dept. or even on Amazon. Reusing old ones can cause a leak/ improper seal.

I have only used Redline. Honestly I don’t feel any difference from the drivers seat.

Torque it right and you’ll be fine. Never had an issue using the washer over multiple changes. Your preference.

 

I second this. Absolutely no reason NOT to, since they cost less than $1.

 

Me too. Never had a problem. redline is good stuff too.

 

What interval are you running between changes? I roll 30k for both boxes, the MT & transfer case.

 

I used mobil 1 here recently when I did the oil change. I had about 65K miles on the truck and I did not replace the gaskets. I may replace them next change. They were still in very good condition.

By the way, where are people getting these gaskets and washers for less than $1??

A new set is like $15. (for front, rear, and transfer case). Not that, that breaks the bank by any means but these things are not $1.

 

I only use Redline gear oils. In some boxes it makes more difference than others. In the diff, most likely any good quality synthetic would do fine. Redline does make a mid weight that I really like. It helps keeps temps down when towing or climbing hills.

OP....my two cents, I was changing all three diffs every 30,000 and oil came out pretty clean so now I'm doing it every 50,000 or so. I don't tow or off-road often, mostly highway use and light hauling so I don't get too caught up in what brand of oil I use, but I do use synthetic. I've used Mobil 1 and a couple others, no difference. As others have said, using new washers is cheap and a good idea but probably not necessary.

Oh and by the way, hold your nose when doing this maintenance, the fluid stinks!

 

Agreed, I did mine at 35k and it was very clean. Looked newer than the fluid I was putting in. I don’t tow either beside one time years ago. I would say change it every 60k miles unless you tow frequently. I’m pretty sure the 30k recommendation is so dealers can get business with maintenance items

A little food for thought, some people recommend against synthetic in the diffs. Not sure why, but it might be worth looking into.
