Lol, based on my preferences, a hardshell will fit me better, only reason I'm selling mine. I love sleeping in a RTT though.

That is going to be my next logical upgrade. I have the non powered version of this. Its just not on my truck right now because I sold my cap and Im going back to a bed cage. But it has to be built. As the late great Tom Petty once said.. The Waiting is the hardest part. (dont think he was talking about RTTs though )

Here you go! Hopefully this answers your questions.

    https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/pts/d/tuff-stuff-roof-top-tent-rtt/6351779302.html
It's my wife and I, and our 85lb dog. Our plan was to have him sleep in the cab, but he just whines the whole time. So next trip I tried the annex, and he did great. Only thing is I really don't want to have to set up the annex every single time, climbing up and down the ladder was a pain to me, and it honestly wasn't as comfortable as I thought (but that's moreso the tents mattress). Itd also be nice not having all that weight on the roof, acting like a sail. I figure for the premium price of a RTT I better love it, and I don't. Might as well sell it while it's new to get all my money back, and then buy a nice ground tent.

There was a recent group buy for a non-name brand hardshell through Chandlerdoom. It was at a great price point, so jumped in. I was going to go all out on a James Baroud or Autohome. However, the group buy seemed like a good way to get more time in a hardshell and find out for sure what specific hardshell features I would ultimately want before dropping nearly 4 thousand dollars on one.

The most important things I wanted was lighter weight, 360 degree views and a quick setup/stow (hence hardshell). I had narrowed it down to the above mentioned brands based on those attributes and a few other variables. I then discovered the group buy tent, and it checked the major boxes. I wasn't sure if I would want a solar vent/fan (JB) or some of the extra options of the Autohome enough to justify the extra cost.

I bought the CVT thinking I needed the most heavy duty, long lasting, rugged RTT out there. I think the CVT summit line is exactly that.
The mistake I made was purchasing a RTT based on how I want to camp, which is, very often and for extended periods of time. If that was the reality, I would keep the CVT.
However, the reality is I need to be "light and fast". My trips are generally last minute and rather short. Essentially, I find out Friday evening that I can get out Saturday morning for a 2 night trip. I like to explore during the days and often end up sleeping somewhere different each night. I need to be able to load up and go, usually without assistance, quickly.
In my situation, the soft shell CVT simply does not lend itself to this type of camping as well as a hardshell will. I'm willing to sacrifice the space and durability for "light and fast".

    Hope that helps!

For sure! I can't wait to get it and test it out. Since I saved some money on the tent vs. a brand name, I'm going to spend a little extra and get a front runner rack with the quick attach RTT mounts. The video sold me on the mounts. Hopefully I can sell my rack along with the tent. Nothing wrong with it, but the front runner lends itself to light and fast better.

I’ve got a couple RTT questions that have probably been answered, but I just don’t have time to read all 708 pages...

    1) Are ARB tents made in China like most of the others? I’ve heard conflicting answers on that question.

    2) Has anyone mounted an extended style RTT on a middle-height bed rack, and if so, is it a hassle? I have a bed rack on order through Bay Area Metal Fab, and the rack sits at about the top of the back window. Because of this, I’m guessing the annex will be mostly useless, since it is too short to stand under. What I’m more concerned with is that even with the annex removed, is it a hassle to duck under the extended part over the ladder in order to climb in?

Any help would be appreciated. I love the looks of the ARB, but if a low mounting height is bad with that design, I’ll reconsider.

The annex will be pretty useless at that height. It’s not a problem ducking under the extension, you can stand upright in the covered space underneath it and it makes getting stuff in or out of the tent easy. Your tent will sit a bit higher than mine.
