Finished up my skid for now. It warped a ton when I welded in all the whiskey bends and I had to extend the forward mounts.

    Cleaned, painted, and installed today.

I’m going to make a new one when I make a bumper this coming spring. So this is a hold over.

This one is only 10 gauge steel and uses the flimsy front mounts. I’ll get some 3/16ths soon and start mocking up over the winter.

10g is not thick enough for you? I know it's not quite 1/8th", but it will take a serious impact to deform that.

    Looks great BTW.

Just picked up a new Snap-on cart for my Esab Rebel.
Got it from a guy who never used it, still has plastic on top etc, so brand new but for a few hundred under new price.

I like it bc it fits everything neatly.

Anyone else have one by chance?

I was think about doing something similar. Using 10 gauge, the existing mounts and reinforcing it with 1" angle. How much would you say yours weighs?

Cool dog~ looks happy, reminds me of my bros old Blue "Tobby", that lived to be like 18 0r 19.

Those Green boxes in the back there.. Did you by chance make those? if not, do you (or anyone else) know of a source to get all the hardware from?

All my research said to use 3/16 or 1/4. I had 10 gauge from my smoker project, so I made a test unit. If it holds up fine maybe I’ll keep using it, if not I’ll try building another.

Hmmm maybe 30 lbs? I have no idea to be honest.

I’d def reinforce the stock mount, if not fab a new one. I’m not sure how my front mount will hold up tbh. I’d like to be able to jack the truck up from the skid, but I’m not sure I could do that with the stock front mount

All I know is the 18g original skids can absorb quite a bit, 10g should be able to work just fine.

My thought process wants the skid to deform. This absorbs energy before something really expensive bends. The frame for example.

I used 10g for my bumpers for just this reason. I can always build a new bumper if I bend mine. I'm not so good at rebuilding the frame.

10 gauge skids would be shit in one trip where I wheel. My 3/16" with reinforcements are bent to shit. Frame still good.

I guess it comes down to just how often the truck gets dropped on the plate and at what speed .

Make it stronger then the next weakest link starts to fail on repeated impacts .

Skid plates will always be the weakest link in this case.

I would like to steer you towards a HF portable bandsaw. Even with heavy use it will last many years. Just buy quality blades.

I have no use for a chop saw. The band saw will do the job better...and it's so quiet. You don't need ear plugs to use the band saw.
