I was talking to one of their reps back in Aug at some expo thing in Long Beach, Ca. who said that they will have an annex available XL for sure by end of the year.

I did mine just shy of under a grand with a new Smitty tent and building my own bed rack with the help of a few friends

So i am thinking of selling my Leer topper and getting a CBI (update: RCI seems to be a way better option at almost double the price) bed rack... which means I am going back to a soft RTT. Most likely back to Mt. Shasta. Hit up Bobby from CVT today, asked if I could just swap for a Mt. Shasta instead of waiting for a replacement hard shell.

I love the rack I made! Saves quite a bit of money compared to buying allpros. And Craigslist is awesome for RTT deals

just curious. what are the reasons for not mounting the tent atop the Leer? Is it a height issue, a weight issue or both?

I had my old Mt. Shasta on top of the Leer before. The number one problem was inability to park in my garage. It was 3" too tall to fit in. Setup/breakdown was also a bitch. I had to run circles around the truck and climb up and down, just to reach things, bed rack would lower the tent enough for me to set it up with ease. I also have a velcro princess of a dog who weighs 55 lbs and sleeps in bed with us. Climbing up and down that ladder while holding him is a major chore. And lowering the tent and dropping some weight may give me more MPG, which would be nice. I am at 11-12MPG right now.

One nice thing about having it on a canopy/full height rack is height. Allows you to "stretch" the annex out to its full height, and makes using the annex area a bit more convenient. Couple that with one that has side lift windows and you can access the stuff in the bed from inside the annex. That is the direction I'm thinking about heading or a full rack with a soft top maybe like @90yota has.

Not sure of the weight issue your asking about.

I'm guessing he meant that much weight that high up. I sure notice it with my RTT on the cap.

I used my annex once. It was nice, but I'd rather use that space to bring a couple of 30 packs :) Track is pretty much immobilized with the RTT open, so not like i'm going anywhere haha

I know a kid in town here runs a CVT on his canopy and hes always worried that the canopy wont hold the weight of the tent with the family sleeping in it.

Nah, nothing to worry about while stationary. Between the rack, tent and my wife and I we're at about 500 lbs and it's just fine.

We get alot of rain here too, so for me, its a nice option to have for extra storage (out of the weather) and a place to dress before heading out.

I had 4 adults, 2 50+ lb dogs an a chihuahua in my Mt. Shasta hanging out all night and playing cards against humanity once. (Dogs did not play, unfortunately). The truck and the topper didn't even squeak.

Nah. It's pretty much the same at Mt. Shasta, just a bit shorter. Plenty of space for more dogs!

Only thing to be aware of when mounted so high is the wind drag. It sucks
