That was who I was thinking of, too.

Speaking of which ... I was in the PI during the marshal law under Marcos in '72. He had those people terrified. Friends went missing after speaking ill of him. They would not let me mention his name in their house.

REI Co-Op ... that no questions asked policy is as old as the co-op. And that return issue is just as old. The members benefited from the Garage Sales.
If it is a co-op, where the hell is all of this profit, that they are so concerned with, going?

No, it is just plain wrong, and too many people are too young to know that.
Knowing the history of REI might help understand that it is not a corporation, it is a cooperative. Well, it used to be.

Look at the kind of crap you can buy there now. It isn't even an outdoor store anymore. Everything is for the mall hikers and glampers.
And very few of the sales people are anything more than that, sales people.

I have only been a member since the '80s, but even I can see the destruction done by the corporate destroyers.

That is beautiful. What campground is that?

Why I'm building a platform to get above the fender wells. Me, the lady, one small dog, and one large dog was pretty snug!
Replacing the air mattress with some think memory foam. So, this guy will not pop it

Yeah mixed feelings on REI. It is most definitely not what it once was. But really no bricks and mortar store is what it once was these days. At least REI has figured out how to survive.

As to the lifetime warranty that was destroyed by the internet just like so many things. People buying worn out crap off of E-bay and then "returning" it. Other truly abussive crap. Same thing happened to Costco's formerly generous electronics return policy. On the whole the REI policy is still quite generous compared to most anywhere else. Ideally they could have restricted the older more generous policy to members only, with a receipt and then maintained a black list of frequent returners.

REI is mostly selling over priced glamping crap these days - and has been for well over a decade. For me they jumped the shark when I saw they were selling $30 backpacking chop-sticks sometime in the early 2000's. Seriously.

BUT - some of their house brand stuff is actually quite good for what it is. Decent quality at a good price with useful designs. And I'm sometimes happy to be able to stop by the store to examine things in person but finding the most useful stuff in stock is often a challenge.

REI is mostly a victim of the marketplace. They have to stock what sells and sadly most consumers are morons that are more interested in their favorite color and whether an outfit makes their butt look big rather than its actual function (or lack thereof). You have to move product through a physical store pretty quick to justify the expense of that presence. And so most of the "real" backpacking equipment has moved online.

For now I continue to be glad there is at least one outdoor retailer with a physical presence near me that survives!

Good points. And I understand your position better than earlier.
Brick and mortar points yes. I do not see REI, a Co-Op, as the same thing. I am old school I guess.
I have always had to prove I purchased from REI.

That’s at Clayton Lake State Park. It’s an awesome and under used campground.

So, I looked for that, because we like places to stop heading out west, or back.
"Clayton Lake State Park is a state park of New Mexico."

    But, here:
    You say SE Oklahoma..... ???

Here some in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Love it here, open to some light off roading or just sweet camp spots out here if anyone knows of any!

Clayton is a small town in NE New Mexico but it’s also a tiny town in SE Oklahoma. Both have a “Clayton lake state park”. Search Clayton lake state park Oklahoma and you’ll find the one that picture was taken at. It’s about 40 miles from the border of Arkansas, the closest “big” (if you can call it that) town is McAlester but that’s about an hour away. I’ve been to Clayton NM too but it’s not nearly as pretty as this park.
