Never thought of that...Good point. He was already named, and sort of kinda responded to it, so we left it as it was.

Most believe it is because the translation of Alsation Wolf Dog, who started as a dog that worked sheep to keep wolf's at bay at a distance it is hard to see what is a wolf and what is a dog in the case of GSD. I believe it is the first breeders that named the dogs and the American kennel club that kept the translation from the German breeder's and the English version that the English used witch is Alsation wolf dog too keep both happy. It is the only dog with dog in its name and the purists want to keep it that way.

The way they have "Dog/ German shepherd dog" is probably the way that pound uses on their forms, much like "cat/ Siamese cat". In which case they should of used canine / feline as the family order - imo.

The Name "German Shepherd dog" is translated from "Deutscher Schäferhund" where "hund" translates as dog (much to where we get "hound" today.) Dacshund or "badger dog" is another example.

Your dog could be called a Vorstehhund (pointer dog) but that includes German Long hair pointers (GLP's), German Wirehair (GWP's) and GSP's. GSP's go by Deutscher kurzhaariger, Deutsch Kurzhaar, or Kurzhaar in Germany; which is why it probably didn't translate over.

Large dog breeds (German shepherd dog breeds included) are known for "anatomically" long legs as puppies. That's why its usually important to keep puppies from getting too over weight since they grow very fast and their bones/joints can't keep up.

The Alsatian wolf dog got its name from tommy's in WWI that brought the dogs home to England from Alsace, France after the war. Britain was still very anti German at the time so they renamed them that, where America didn't have that much resentment. They are the same as a GSD and many breeders have dropped the Alsatian name and returned to GSD. But today no matter where they come from, most show dogs are messed up, imo, compared to how the breed started.

I do not have a dog, but I used to explore and camp with my cat.
I came up with an excellent method for water and food in the truck bed under a camper shell (topper).
I no longer have the cat or the thing that I made, so I do not have pictures.
Let me describe what I made:
I went to a landscape construction yard and asked for scrap perforated 3" PVC drain pipe (white triple wall).
I took the pipe and cut it at a slight angle to a thin height (3/4")
I ended up with two pieces (one for water and one for food)
I then took a "strut" nut (you can use a 't' nut) with a short bolt through one of the holes on the pipe and attached each of the cut pipe pieces to the bed rail mount in the truck bed.
After you get them dialed in, you can buy disposable "cocktail" clear or red cups and they jam right in, keep em loaded high enough for pet to feed/drink.
You could also use the truck bed cup holder mounts that are pretty common on this forum.

Wow I could not agree with you more!!! I have a GSD that both parent are from Germany and that follows the German standards. She has much less of a sloped back and I was told by the breeders that she would not be accepted in the American show rings even though I have DNA proof that she is all GSD. I had her DNA tested because I could hardly understand the people that I got her from. They all spoke German except for there teen son. She is from a working or cattle dog line in Central Kansas. She is much more upright then an American show dog and loves to work, and is a great Pheasant dog. She is much more like the Shiloh Shepherd Dog or a Northern Germany dog.

Yeah, NOT a fan of the new breed standard. Like the old "look". Seems much better for the animal, too. Seems the slope wouldn't help any with bad hips.

The “slope” usually has to do with them being in a stacked position. Also it’s called angulation, and gsd’s have to have angulation for proper conformation. I also do not like showlines and only prefer working lines from german blood.

This is my gsd who is actually lacking in angulation and is way over breed standard in height for a female....still love her to death though lol

In 2018 we are getting a male pup from vvv 01BAE4C1-5667-4F3D-84B1-DB1C4EB7693D.jpg

The angulation really means nothing.(edit:unless extreme like a poorly bred ASL gsd) Latigo has an OFA score (hips) of excellent which is rare

Angulation has more to do with working ability and also osteopathic problems down the road. The Americn breed standard for the GSD sucks. Years of careless breeding (my opinion) have ruined the breed.

Looks, temperament, and overall dog health is why we went with the shiloh shepherd dog vs a king shepherd or regular GSD. I've always loved GSD type dogs since I was a kid* and my wife stumbled upon (after a lot of research btw) the shiloh's after we bought a house and could get pets.

*But then 2 weeks ago we went and visited my grandmother, who I don't get to see very often because she lives pretty far away (7 hours drive one way). 25 years ago, when I was knee high to a grasshopper, they had 2 dogs named torro and trooper. We were told they were just long hair GSD's, but after talking to her we found out they were in fact original shiloh's from tina m barber (she started the breed in the 70's) before her kennel burnt down. Its weird just how small this world is.

My dog is a ham. She loves to sunbathe and act a fool. We went to Moab this weekend. Here she is being a drama queen.

And she has the perfect tag now. Queen wiggle butt, her wiggles have intensified greatly the past couple weeks. I think she’s settling in after our move to AZ.
