    Gear oil doesn't darken like engine oil. There is no carbon contamination, so color is not a measure of whether the oil is still good. Of course if it gets horribly overheated it might turn darker, but normal wear will not make it darker. What does happen is that the long chain molecules that make the oil lubricate, get sheared. As they get sheared, they lose the ability to adequately protect the gears from the high pressures generated in a differential. THAT is why it should be changed every 30K. Synthetics significantly decrease the temperatures in the differential. The Tacoma runs hotter than most already because they paired an 8" ring & pinion with a 4.0L engine. The 8.0 belongs in a 4 cylinder truck.

    I picked a bag of 20 or so of them for my 1st gen off of Amazon for maybe 10 bucks. It was a genuine Toyota parts labeled bag, too. The dealer is probably way overcharging like they do for most things.

    They're designed to crush and warp to seal the plugs so they should be changed out any time you take the plugs off.

    Ah, I can't comment on that. Manual is easy, but I've never looked into autos because I don't own one.

    Do you guys need friction modifier with that? I've always just use straight Redline in my Mustang without any friction modifier, I'm not sure about the Tacoma though.

    The ones I saw were on Amazon and do not come in packs.

    Maybe we are talking about different things. I'm talking about the metal gaskets. Not the gaskets you use for like an oil change. In fact I didn't even see those on the drain bolts for the differential.

    That Amazon kit is simply someone tossing all three types of gaskets for the change in one bag. It's a good price.

    You can also buy the individual gaskets in bulk packs of 10 or so.

    Depending on how often you change, how long you own the vehicle, or how many of the vehicles you have, it may end up cheaper buying in bulk.

    Not a bad price. I paid more than that for differential gaskets at the dealer last week. On top of that that guy behind the parts counter didn't even know what a T-Case was when I told him "I need the gaskets for a T-Case":goingcrazy:

    We're talking about the same thing, the crush washers that go on the drain and fill plugs for the diffs, t-case and manual transmissions.

    This is the pack I bought off of Amazon:

    It was a bag of 10 for $11, but these are for the 1st gen Tacomas. Not sure if they work on later gens.

    edit: I think the confusion is coming from term 'crush washer' versus 'gasket' as Toyota calls them, maybe I'm wrong in calling them crush washers...it's just what I usually hear them referred to as on here

    I4 or v6 engine? I4 engine just needs pan drain and refill with 4 quarts of Toyota T-IV trans fluid or equivalent and I would recommend getting a new drain plug gasket >Toyota #35178-50010 from the Dealer use a torque wrench to tighten no more than 15 ft/pds. they strip easy. Refill the 4 quarts thru the dip stick tube with skinny funnel,

    probably just an interchangeable term, might be better to call them gaskets though when searching for the part online since that's what seems to be printed on the all the packaging I've seen.

    'Looking stuff up' is quite different than actually knowing what you are looking for.

    If you ever find a parts guy who knows some less common bits, or goes out of his way to track something down for you, write down his name so you can ask for him the next time.
