Well, the contents inside the extinguisher are already under pressure.... can’t imagine if you add that much heat. When it’s 110 degrees outside , it’s a lot hotter inside an enclosed cab.

I keep on in my truck here in Arizona. I have always had one in my car/truck. Never had one pop yet. A buddy has his mounted in his bed and it's exposed to direct sunlight. He's never had issues either.

Thanks for all the info fellas. I guess its one of those risks I'm going to have to take lol. Better to take a chance than end up without one if you might need it. From the way it sounds though, I should be alright

All pressurized tanks, whether it's an air compressor, fire extinguisher, or compressed gas tank, have a pressure relief to safely vent the pressure. So, if there were to be a problem with a fire extinguisher inside your truck, the worst that would happen would be that you come out to your truck and there's white powder everywhere.

While we're on the subject of fire extinguishers, once you use it, even for just a short burst, it must be recharged or disposed of. Once you use it, the powder gets in the valve and will cause the pressure to leak out.

At least the fire happened in the parking lot and not in your garage at home. That would really suck.

I've done that for most of my wire runs, but I'll be doing the rest ASAP! Good on ya!

After looking at the truck on my neighborhood shop's lift, it looks like the zip-tie rubbed and broke or let go and let the cable swing freely. When I parked at work it let the inline fuse on the cable hang against the cat, which caused it to melt and ignite.

Yeah even if one were to vent and cover the inside of my truck with white bullshit I would vacuum it out with a smile. Most definitely a risk worth taking! I wouldn't have my truck right now without one.

That's a great point! Also they do expire. Not very quickly, but eventually they go bad. I've heard that many commercial operations have you shake up the extinguisher monthly to prevent the powder from settling and compacting.

I live in an apartment building, so no garage to burn down!

either way... re-route those wires properly through the firewall.... and that fuse shouldn't of been more than 6 in off the battery... why the hell it was all the way down at the cat....

Thanks for sharing your experience and reminding all of us to have some sort of extinguisher around just in case! They won't do any good for a fire that takes hold, but as you demonstrated something is better than nothing and can work if you catch it early.

Photo I took a few years back of someone's truck having a really bad night. Which was making for a really bad night for the surrounding vehicles and nearby apartments (the firefighter is waiting for water and started knocking the fire down within 30 seconds of this photo).

He's lucky he put anything out with that. That's Kidde's I sure hope this thing has pressure and that 2.5# of chemical is going to cut. A 5# ABC with a metal head or nothing.

That's the plan! Since this was the first thing I did on the truck I just used a kit with pre-cut wires.

That's a scary pic! And you're right, the fire extinguisher is only going to help if you get there quickly enough.

The one I just bought is a larger one with a metal head! That one had just barely enough to put out the small fire. It may not have been the best, but the best fire extinguisher is the one you have on hand.

Look into fiberglass wire sleeves for those sketchy runs that cant be avoided.

02 sensor extensions from urd run very close to headers, and are shielded with such sleeving.

Cheap plastic split loom will melt easy, even at a good distance from an exhaust manifold.

I'll grab one when I start wiring things back up! I didn't take one this weekend when I was in there.

That's a great idea! I've heard metal tape would work too, but it makes a lot of sense to copy the factory wire runs!

I just sliced the shit out of my hand the other day with some reflective metal tape the hvac guys used in the garage.

Yet Ive swapped headers a few times and never cut myself on the fiberglass reinforced wire covers. Also no glue residue.
