so when i bought my 08 taco last year their were a million things i was thinking about and the last thing that was ever going to cross my mind was one of the last things the guy selling me my truck said. He handed me 3 different sets of keys. 2 normal keys each with the unlock/lock buttons on it with a ring, and the third key he told me was for when i get a vallet, the vallet key allows you to run the car but not unlock the glove box... i just realized theres no lock on my glovebox!! wtf?? input??

FYI, the 2009 has no glovebox lock, and the dealer told me the same story about the "vallet key".

Yeah, I also missed the "jipped" part. So the guy made a mistake and said the valet key unlocks a nonexistent lock that no Tacoma has. Big deal.

What would have been nice is if the valet key didn't open the fuel door.

Oh well, our trucks don't have a lock on the fuel door like my '91 did.

I won't comment on the sales people working at the dealership...

^What would've REALLY been nice would be a remote fuel door. That's on my (small) list of things I wish the truck had.

My 06 came with three keys. Two black ones for normal operation and one grey one for making copies. The grey key is for the “Engine Immobilizer” system. See the following quote from Toyota.com:

The engine immobilizer is a state-of-the-art anti-theft system. When you insert your key into the ignition switch, the key transmits an electronic code to the vehicle. The engine will only start if the code in the transponder chip inside the key matches the code in the vehicle’s immobilizer. Because the transponder chip is embedded in the key, it can be costly to replace. If you lose a key, your Toyota dealer can help, or you can find a qualified independent locksmith to perform high security key services at www.aloa.org.

I’ll get the page number from my manual later this week.

    Yes, I read the manuals
    No, I’m not any fun.

All three keys have the engine immobilizer feature; I don't see the point (or agree) with what you are saying here - makes no sense to me.
If a locksmith uses the valet key to make a copy, you have a second valet key assuming they have the ability to make one with the immobilizer feature. If they make a copy of a regular key, then you have another copy of the regular key.
The valet key, is just that, period. Keeps a valet from accessing your glove box - if it actually came with a lock. Has nothing to do with making copies.

Same thing happened to me. Don't even want to tell you how long it took me to notice the glove box didn't have a lock! Anyway, I can't say I feel jipped, I just have an extra key.

Nope, it sure can't just be copied by some Joe-Shmoe that want's to later have someone steal your vehicle. Yep, it is a great feature.

Will the keys last 20 years? That is my question / concern. That is how long I expect my '08 to last. Otherwise, instead of paying someone 4 bucks to get one, you may be paying someone 100 bills or more.

Well…. It would appear that I’m full of useless and or bad information. I swear that someone changed pages 11 and 12 of my manual, which now states that the two primary black keys and the grey key have the transponder chip installed. Errrrr I guess drinking and posting doesn’t work for me. In the future I’ll attempt to avoid such scenarios, but I can’t guarantee that it won’t.

From my understanding you get three regular keys unless you have "engine immobilizer" in which case you get two keys plus the "un-copiable" valet key.

Of course the metal can be physically copied. It's just that the transponder codes can't be copied. I don't know how that works, because the truck can certainly understand transponder codes.

I think our real security is that guys smart enough to copy the keys correctly are busy stealing Mercedes and Jaguars and Beemers.

The valet key has a transponder in it - otherwise how would they start your car to park it? The keys are cut differently such that the valet key won't open the non-existent lock on the glove box - that is the only difference besides the color.

Don't know what trucks have the immobilizer and what trucks don't.

I only looked at the keys casually, but the cuts appeared to be the same. I'll have to look again.

Yes, every key must emit a code when querried by the truck's computer or the truck wouldn't start.
