Got a little group together to go checkout the Arroyo Tapiado Mud Caves in Anza Borrego:


Notice the truck on the very end... its a completely stock lowrider GMC Sierra, with extra low running boards and the stupid front fairing that hangs down to only inches off the ground. This truck had no business being out in the desert but we had plenty of daylight left so figured he could backtrack and take the easy way around!! Well with a group of 15 people and 5 trucks everything took more time than anticipated and if you're familiar with the area we ended up at the top of Diablo's Dropoff right before sunset, trying to cross over to Fish Creek to setup camp. For some stupid reason I felt we could get that Sierra through the dropoff if we were careful.... well we made it, but it took over 4 hours for a section that normally takes me 15-20 minutes. If we didn't have the TreadPros I just bought we would've been totally fucked!

Lucky for us I had randomly bought the TreadPros in a group buy a couple months ago, using them to bridge gaps and stacking them to get clearance on a full size truck I thought for sure they were getting sacrificed to the desert on Saturday.... I've seen tons of MaxTrax and similar treads snap/crack/break doing even easier recoveries than we were attempting.... but after using (abusing) them all night they barely even have a scratch!! Functionally still 100% perfect. This things are TOUGH, I'll never own a different set again.

We were so focused on getting out of that canyon I didn't really take many pics, but here's a couple of a seemingly easy obstacle but for this stock Sierra we moved about 200 rocks to either side of that boulder in the middle and built a rock bridge to get the Sierra up and over (don't have a before pic but when we got there that big unmovable rock in the middle was the only one there... all those other big rocks we carried and moved into place to build our "bridge"):

This is a shameless plug for TreadPros because I am now a complete fanboy!! If you don't already have a pair do yourself a favor and get this essential offroad tool!! They're the most expensive traction tread on the market but worth every penny. Should be the FIRST tool any offroad buys.

Nice work on the bridging + stacking. Did a lot of that last spring further north in NV.

any proof on this? Maxtrax specifically. I recall the owner or someone higher up at the company saying they have only had a few break over the years. Google “broken maxtrax” and every picture you’ll find are of other brands.

Not saying your trip and experience with tred traction boards wasn’t fantastic, but i’d be really surprised to see the “tons” of broken maxtrax of which you speak. They conform to terrain extremely well and are the most durable of the lot.

 

I think what he was getting at is that these are almost double the alternatives at the bottom.

Ah.

Recovery boards and materials are not created equal. Some literally break during the first use and are only 1/3 of the price.. it's an expensive way to lose money, especially if they leave you stuck on trail.

To be perfectly honest I might just be assuming everything I've seen before is "maxtrax", kind of like not all tissue paper is "Kleenex" but everyone calls it that. So yeah I shouldn't be calling out maxtrax specifically, what I've seen is a lot of broken and cracked traction treads (brands unkown) so I assumed the same thing would happen to my TreadPros and I was pleasantly surprised at how well they took the abuse

If people have had good experiences with MaxTrax I'm sure those are good to I just don't know for sure.

 

The legitimate maxtrax can practically be bent until the ends touch, without breaking. The lower priced knockoffs are a different story.
