MT double clutch?

do the third gen manuals not seem to have as much resistance whenever downshifting? Both of my 2nd gens will literally slow themselves down if you skip from 6th to 4th or from 5th to 3rd so thats the main reason i do it, that and because i live in the hill country and it comes in handy versus riding the brakes all the time..

That would drive me crazy too if my lady did that.. but hey at least your wife can drive a standard! most females this day in age dont even know how to do that.. consider yourself lucky! Whenever i finally get married im not sure if ill ever let my wife drive my trucks, but ill make sure she knows how to in case shit ever hits the fan or if im too hammered to get behind the wheel

Just because it is a hot button issue, I will say that I have no regrets with my 3rd Gen. It definitely has a different engine character compared to the 2nd Gens that I test drove (never owned a truck before but have driven a few). Accelerating, the 4.0l was nice and torque-y but felt winded up top. Great engine braking when needed.

The 3.5l builds power and torque the whole way. There are a couple dips in the dynos sheets, so you kind of get a shot in the kidneys once it gets over 3,500rpm / 4k and keeps pulling hard to redline. The downside of the programming is that there is very little engine braking. Put it this way, wind resistance seems to do about as much as the engine does.

It is one of the few things that I don't like about the Taco. I'm adapting but hoping that OV can work that out.


I do appreciate that the Wife doesn't care what the transmission is, although she is favoring her Forester XT these days. I hate driving that thing and would feel completely differently if I could row it since that motor is just stellar. I tried to get her into an old Legacy 2.5 GT or the new WRX that was due out a year later. There were no GTs to be found at the time and she wasn't waiting any longer.

Our oldest Daughter (14yrs) wants to learn to drive the Taco. So, yeah, I'm pretty stoked.

 

At least it's an XT though, right? I tried to get my wife into a turbo car, but she hates revving up the engines, so it's pointless. When I got her to test drive a WRX, she complained that it was so underpowered. Mind you, she upshifted at around 2500.

So, we ended up getting her a super underpowered Impreza instead. LOL!

Oh my. Our 2014 XT (stock other than a K&N drop in) spools like a diesel. You can hear the turbo whistling and see the PSIs pickup way early in the rev band. Seriously just off of idle. If you hit the S# button, the throttle mapping is even better.

I would like to get in a 2015+ WRX sometime to see what the 2.0 DIT does with a real GB.

I was willing to live with the N/A motor if should would have like the XV. I can't explain it, but she has these weird claustrophobic feelings in cars that just aren't. She initially felt closed in the Tacos but has came around since we bought it. I am looking forward to her first drive and am hoping that she doesn't like the down shifting. Easier OV sell!

 

I taught my (then) wife to drive a M/T. No matter how hard I tried, she WOULD NOT downshift properly in traffic. Just coast around with the clutch in, brake, and shove the stick in the gear she thought she'd need next. AND stand on the clutch through an entire stoplight cycle.

 

Hmm... be careful with the K&N drop in. EJ255s and EJ257s don't do well with intake mods without a tune.

You know, I haven't driven an FA20 extensively. The twin-scroll is nice though. What I really want to do is swap in a Version8 EJ207 into my GC. It's not a priority though. :-/

So... the XV is cool, but it's pretty much the same car as the Impreza. The Impreza is better on gas because it's more aerodynamic. But the selling point for my wife between those two was that you can't get a sunroof with a manual transmission. So the Impreza it was!

I mean, I also taught my eldest son to drive M/T. He gets it.
Lol, he's actually gets embarrassed if a shift is not smooth or completely blown while I'm in his car.
I took the time though, to make sure he understood the mechanics behind what he was doing (like what rev matching actually does).

Best part is, he learned on his own damnned clutch

Edit: I made one mistake that stands out while teaching.. I mentioned the tach too soon. Should've covered it up with paper and made him rely on sound/feel. FUUUUUCK it was hard to ween him of that habit when getting the car going from a stop.

 

You got me by about 1/2 year on the dating, unless you dated for 22yrs then married. Nov 1st will be 20 years, should be up for parole at some point.

 

I screwed up by not letting my son learn on my 09 before trading, now he will have to learn on the Outback, no way I'll let him try on the new taco.

 

My other son (2 yrs younger) wants to learn too, but he currently drives an auto (barf). I said, maybe in low range lolol.

I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary with the motor. We're up to about 35,000mi now. Everything looks good in the Torque app. I mainly like the K&N for a bit more intake sound and cleaning.

The twin-scroll and the real purdy equal length headers are nice. Bad location for the turbo though. Right up front behind the skid plate. I keep meaning to shove my endoscope down the intake to see if they have the valve deposits sorted.

Toys are rarely a priority. That's what drew me into motorcycles. But, then the continuous wrenching has worn me out. So, I'm in Taco land now.

Yeah. That is the crazy part. Just about all the mechanical parts interchange between the Impreza, XV, and Forester. She thought the Legacy felt cramped also? I just don't understand sometimes.

In all, I would pick the 15+ WRX even over the STi. But that is just me liking that motor.

The option choices are as odd as those on the Taco. Why they can't be consistent and easy is just baffling. Damn bean counters! I might have got there with the XV if we could have had sunroof, leather, and MT. Turbo would have been icing on the cake, but. . .

 

Mine is only 13, shit 14 soon, but anyways, he has read the driving law book about 10 times already and can not wait to drive.

Oh and I prefer to drive a manual, but my wife can not drive an automatic, it's actually funny to watch for a few minutes.

 

Just shift her at the proper revs up and down..... Starting from a stop is the hardest..... I used to park facing downhill in my driveway and then again at work.... Just needed to start the car rolling, then shift her into gear.

Getting caught at an uphill light, like I said was an issue!!........if I could NOT make a last minute right turn.....I had to put her in neutral, shut motor off, Place in first and restart the car in gear when green lite came on.....!! Was a lot of entertainment for other drivers, and a lot of unnecessary right turns...... hehe

It REALLY got interesting just before I scraped that car....the starter went out..... Had to hand crank it to warm it up then "bump" start from a downhill grade...

it was a 1959 Morris Oxford.....worst piece of crap England ever produced.....!! If the radio called for rain, the car would start sputtering... It did not like rain.

 

Ha! Yeah, two years of dating. We're December 17th (courthouse at lunchtime, no rings, no witnesses) and May 9th (wedding celebration). Given how it all went down, the lunchtime gig was way better.

My neighbor and I have that parole discussion all the time.

 

Good man. I'm 27 right now and I'm going to keep this taco and pass it onto my kids as their first vehicle. I'm sure manuals will be outlawed by that time haha.

 

I abused my Cousin's Dad's 626 when she let me drive it. So, I will pay that back with letting the Daughters try out the Taco.

The oldest drove our Forester a few times now and really had a good handle if it by the second attempt. On the first, I was just thrilled that she was listening to what I was saying.

The rental Camry that I had was almost a disaster. I didn't realize that it didn't have a hand brake until it was almost too late heading for a hedge, but she reeled herself in and found the brake pedal. Haha! I was starting to go for the shifter and keys.

So far, I have stayed completely away from any gauge talk. Just going with heads up football for now.

Once, I had both Daugherts driving the Ural in our cul-de-sac while I was on the back seat helping cover the controls. I swear, our younger Daughter had better throttle control that I had when I first rode it. I can't wait to see how that goes. So far, she doesn't want to try the cars.
