I went with the Viper 5706V, really happy with it so far. Went to several different shops around town for quotes. Helps to ask if they can do a better deal if you're paying cash. Cost me $500 out the door for alarm and remote start.

I personally have the 5706v myself and am an installer. A really great unit but if your not looking for an alarm your paying more for features than you need. Granted well worth it if you want the security aspect. If your looking for range you can get a 2 way transmission remote keyless/rs because they will have extended range. If you then really want the range then add the smartstart module and as long as you have cell signal you can start stop lock or unlock your truck from anywhere. Example.... I was in another state on a trip and had my keys. Wife needed to get something out of the truck. She called me and while on the phone I unlocked it for her remotely. Pm me if you have ?s

Same here. I really just want it for the extreme heat in the summer, especially when walking up the boat ramp in the middle of summer. A little head start to get the a/c going before I get there would be nice.

When I sell alarms or even rs I explain to my clients there are really to types of remotes that you need to think about when purchasing. That being said, everyone uses them for the same reason but have different needs or going to be in different environments.
1 way remotes.. lower range and no notification unless you have eyes on it or hear it start:
2 way remotes... longer range and gives you notification of the command it did. Ie start stop lock unlock whatever.
I would say about 9 out of 10 go with 2 way. Think range but also nothing worse than expecting to it be cooled down or heated and you come up to it and it didn’t do anything because you were out of range. Just a thought when looking for one

I think his statements speak volumes. When I was inquiring about different models, One of my questions to the shops was which system they had installed on their personal vehicle? The majority of them said "5706V". Granted some could be bullshitting to up-sell... But hey, get what suits your needs and budget. Good luck OP.

Can you explain why letting a engine run idol is damaging ?

Oil doesnt circulate as well in idol. So you get more cylinder wear. Plus with remote starters the engine will likely be ideling while cold as well adding to negitive impact.

Ideling also ususually gets more fuel in the oil, which is why heavy city traffic drivers are usually recommended to change their oil more often.

Grille vents/covers help you get heat faster in your truck and would not contribute to engine wear and tear.

Oil pressure is lower at idle but pressure needed should also be relative to engine rpm's. I wouldn't think idling while cold would do any more damage than sudden driving with a cold motor before dissimilar metals expand. Isn't an engine at operating temp tighter clearances wise than a cold motor ? Most of my points are based on extreme cold climates with cold starts. These are just my thoughts and I am by no means a mechanical engineer etc.

    It's a never ending $100-$200 a week thing & still going.
If ideling is bad should you turn off your engine when sitting in bumper to bumper traffic?

I've been searching for a remote starter too recently and have done some shopping around; Best buy got a good deal on the Viper remote starters; but I'm not sure I trust the bestbuy guys doing the installation.

I bought a crime stopper RS7-G5 on Amazon that was pre wired for Tacoma’s. It was plug and play and maybe 5 other wires to splice in ( no hacking of major wires ). Took maybe 3 hours to put in myself. I think it was around $300, and very easy to install. I don’t trust anybody to work on my stuff but I also work in the industry and see guys do crappy work all day.

I’m considering now that I look into it more doing a viper alarm with remote start . My thinking is I want 1 remote and not 2 (remote start AND factory door locks fob) and I do like the beep confirmation when locking the doors and the double beep when unlocking as opposed to the parking lights blinking like it is now (stock) . I wonder if any of the alarms alert you through the key fob that they were triggered (ie someone tried to break in or hit the vehicle ) ?

RS160+?? Something like that. It’s just their add-on remote start kit. It doesn’t come with an immobilizer bypass so that needs to be purchased separately, but the one I bought plugged right into the Excalibur unit making the integration easy.

I'm gonna keep you in mind, because I do have a few questions.

I found out (on accident) that my '05 V6 Auto had a Clifford Matrix (3.5, I believe) installed when I bought it. Absolutely love it! 2-way, decent range, and 1 fob for everything. It's nice to defrost the windows in the winter. While everyone else's doors were frozen shut, mine were able to thaw out 10 minutes before getting in and driving away :D

Another thing to keep in mind: Clifford, Viper, and Python are all the same company. I'm not sure if certain models are the same as well, but there are key fobs that works for all 3. I'm sure @Do58 can confirm this.

After lots of research and questions I just had the Compustar 2-way installed. Best Buy just started carrying these and I paid $370 installed. You get the computer/brains and purchase the remote you want. I got the Prime 2-way with 3,000 ft. LED remote that gives feedback via lights and chearping. You get two remotes and a third (single button) that comes with the computer package. I wanted the PRO G-15 but they are only available through Compustar PRO dealers. Best Buy said I could purchase PRO remote elsewhere and they would install. The advantage of the PRO is a 2 or 3 mile range but they are about $125 + more then the Prime. Best Buy gives lifetime warranty on installs and free removal if you sell vehicle etc. They do solder all connections and no wire splices/crimps are used anywhere. I choose Compustar because of reputation/quality and there computer/brain is programmable/upgradable in the future if desired i.e. security system or remote upgrade. Viper just started offering a programmable brain but you have to purchase it specifically, I think it's the DS model ? Also the Tech said the Viper remotes eat batteries like every 2-3 months. The only down fall is I am still trying to figure out the passenger and back door unlock feature, it doesn't exactly react like the factory remote with two quick pushes so I need to read the manual and see what I am doing wrong because sometimes I get it correct but takes multiple attempts (operator error) ? Hope this helps.

I have the Compustar Prime 901 remote controlling their FT-7000AS, as I have an alarm/remote start combo. I didn't need the bypass, as I have a base model. I also added the RPS-Touch, which is a windshield-mounted keypad. Added that because I surf/bike/ski and don't need to carry my keys with me. Also, I'm a 5-speed, and the process for setting reservation mode on a Viper sucks. With the Compustar, I just put it in neutral with the parking brake on, remove the key, and get out. The truck shuts off ~10sec after the door is closed.

BestBuy installed it (since I work there), and even for non-employee pricing I would recommend you go there, as they warranty all the work.
