Has anyone else experienced a "transmission surge" that feels like you have left your foot off of the brake just after stopping? The best way to explain it is that it it feels like the transmission is trying to shift into another gear when stopped...it almost makes me feel like i need to push the brake harder...

Yes, I have the exact same thing. Intermittent, but very noticable. AC is not on. The only thing I can think of is that the transmission is actually in 2nd when I stop, and then shifts into 1st after it realizes that it failed to operate properly earlier. You're not going crazy.

The A/C compressor will still cycle on if you have the climate control on Defrost ,

Mine does it too. I read on here that someone thought it was axlewrap 'unwrapping'.

Thanks PB Stang...wonder if it is an issue that TOYOTA will cover up later? I have 130,000 highway miles on it and am glad to hear that a new 09 is having similar issues.

my truck is a 2008 with 20,000 miles and has done this since it was new. Whenever I stop at a redlight or stop sign it revs up and tries to move forward. And I know what you're talking about when you press the brakes harder , I thought that I was going to roll out into traffick and be either dead or rich several times.

It's the former front man for G&R trying his skills at hip-hop.

It works like this, I'll exaggerate it to make sense.

Your leafsprings are shaped like a 'U'. When you accelerate they go towards an 'S' shape and then as you hit the brakes they return to a 'U' and then 'S' in the opposite direction. Then they want to return to the 'U' after you stop.

But I think this would actually make the truck 'surge' backwards.

I realize this, but I don't think the issue is AC related. I've experienced the AC "surge" you describe in other vehicles and this is different. The axle wrap is the most reasonable reason I've read, but I'm still inclined to think it's something electronic in the transmission considering that it's so intermittent for me. Most frustrating thing is that even with that AND my rough shifting, the dealers around me will not do the TSB for me, and I only have 20k.

Isn't that frustrating? They haven't claimed the AC excuse yet, but they have stated that they "can't duplicate the issue". I've even taken a video on my cell phone and showed it to them to no avail. The part that really pisses me off is that all it takes is a 30 minute download to the ECU, not even any real labor. Hoping they do it Friday when they're already replacing my radio.

Nope...even printed off the TSB instructions and handed them to the service manager. He stated that since they can't consistently duplicate it, they can't reflash it.

As far as the axle wrap vs A/C issue , I think they both can happen , I can see it being axle wrap if it occurs right after you stop , but not 15 seconds later after stopping , that to me seems like the A/C compressor kicking in , which revs the engine and subsequently feels as though you are getting the surge or push ,
