it's disputable, but I don't believe that is correct. obviously whoever wrote the problem is the one with the correct answer.

I believe the answer is 45 though, and there are 3 possible methods to come up with that now.

It could also be argued that it is 13 since you know....5 + 8 = 13 lol, but I'm under the impression it is a sequence/pattern problem. If you fill in the "missing" portion of the pattern (meaning 4 +7) then your final answer would come out to 45. That's method 1.

method 2 is adding 1 to the second number and multiplying by the first number. that works for each line. ex. 1 x (4+1) = 5. so the final line 5 x (8+1) = 45.

method 3 is what Allen just said. multiply the 2 numbers, then add the first one. so 5 x 8 = 40, plus 5 = 45. this also works for each line.

since there are 3 methods to the same answer (45) I believe that is correct.

oh it does, that's why I said it's disputable. it's also disputable that the original writer is an idiot, because we all know 2 + 5 doesn't equal 12. lol

HAHA I would rather be a pilot! I always learned differently than others when it came to math. I would reverse engineer things different and come up with the same correct answer. My teachers hated me

my 9th grade geometry teacher would count 1 point off for each step you didn't show on test... we didn't get along well

Not to mention, how can you (teacher) tell me my way is wrong if my answer is the same as your "correct" answer. I would even show my work the way I figured it out and would still get points taken off test cuz I didn't solve it the way they taught it. Needless to say, after all said and done(and a couple of parent teacher conferences..also my mom was a teacher:D)...my grade would be changed BACK to the higher grade with nothing counted off. LOL, I like to be right, what can I say:rofl:

ugh I hated teachers like that, it was like limiting the ability of the student.

let's just say, I got Saturday School/detention/etc....for backtalking teachers and/or calling them out during class correcting them (surprise surprise right?). Not saying I was/am super intelligent, I just saw things differently.

I understand that certain things need to be solved in a certain way (because getting the right answer the wrong way may not work in every situation, I'm saying the step you take for one problem may be wrong but get you the right answer, and the same steps may get you the wrong answer for another problem), but for instance, figuring sales tax, its 9% in Decatur so you can take the price and multiply it by 1.09% and get your total, but he would want you to multiply the subtotal by .09% and then take that and add it to the sub total to get the answer (this didn't actually happen but it is a good way of showing how I would combined steps or eliminate unnecessary steps and improve efficiency and was punished for it)

yep, I get what you're saying. teach it in a 2 step method, because that makes sense to the majority of the population...but if it's doable in 1 step, let those that understand it do it in 1. My calculus teacher in high school used to praise us for finding easier ways, she was my favorite.

Just talking statically you post exponentially more, so the propensity to get backlash is much higher.

    statically or statistically?

yes you are correct, but I would venture to say per equal posts I get more shit than others, except maybe LC. I can take it, and dish it, so i guess that's why. you either love me or hate me lol.
