    Hello All,

So living in the North East I want to have my stock rims to be used in the summer and picked up a pair of take off Toyota steel rims to use in the Winter.

I called some local shops to have them put on tires and TPMS. The shop I was going with quoted me around $60 for each TPMS. However today they are telling me that they got ones that will fit the rims(had to order some as the ones they had in the shop yesterday didn't fit). They called me this morning stating that even though they fit they don't appear to have the ability to program the sensors with the same ID's so that I won't have to go to the dealership each time I want to change my tires. I'm not sure why the shop wouldn't be able to clone the NAPA TPMS that they purchased, but that's what they have told me when they called me this morning.

So they suggested I call the dealership who just quoted me $90 per TPMS and also stated that those TPMS can't be programmed so I would need to go to the dealership each time I change tires to have them re-program the truck with the new sensor codes. So I don't want to go this route not only are they about double the price once you include tax and install, but from what I understand I would also need to pay Toyota yearly to reprogram the codes when I change my tires...no thanks.

This seems pretty crazy to me as I shouldn't need to have to go to the dealership each time I switch from winter to summer tires.

What have others done to avoid this issue? There must be some sensors that can fit the 2017 steel Tacoma rims and also be programmed so that the codes are cloned.

If anyone has any input or tips please let me know.

I've built a little PVC Pipe tube and inflated it to 32 psi and put my sensors in there, cost me about $20 from lowes and I've been using it for 2 years now and I haven't had a single issue. I'm going to be running winter wheels to and I just leave my PVC pipe in the back storage compartment!

Personally, I did a couple hours of research on the topic, and decided to just say screw TPMS on my winter tire set. I went with standard valve stems. I know that I will get warning lights, but I hope its not too annoying. At some point in time, the aftermarket is going to have to respond with a very simple solution. There are solutions out there, but I'm waiting until they are more proven and reviewed by others :)

I did the same PVC tube as moe204 and it has worked flawless. I have never had a light on. I keep a pretty good eye on my tires so I really do not worry about the TPMS system. I know some people really want the factory system in working order but Toyota makes it such a hassle (and expensive) that this is a great alternative route. I'm not sure why they don't make the system easier to set up. Our GM vehicles just take a few minutes to re-learn the sensors.

No TPMS in my SSR aftermarket wheels. Warning sign on the dash doesn't bother me.

Interesting solution. The sensors on my Jeep Rubicon had to rotate in the tire before being picked up my the computer. Apparently the sensors in the Taco's are a different design.

Look up Techstream on TW, and program your truck yourself with the TPMS IDs.

Man 90$ per wheel is crazy! The parts guy at Cochrane toyota had them in for $44 CDN for 4 Toyota TPMS. Those were for Aluminum wheels.
you might want to check with those guys for prices.

Well, OP, if you feel like driving to Pittsburgh I know where you can score a free set of sensors!

Very Simple, Cut a piece of 3" OD PVC to 6", Buy 2 end caps, mill the one end flat to the thickness for a standard size valve stem, glue the valve stem in and put the sensors in and PVC glue the end caps on! Done!

I think I would go to another shop and see what they come back with. Or do some more investigation on this. One would think they could clone the original ones so swapping the tires out does not drive your blood pressure through the roof and you're not having to go through the programming every time you swap the tires.
