I agree with you. You are now forced to pay $650 for tow package plus about $305-$315 for TSS plus inflation over 2017. I guess I should revise my statement to say the increase is reasonable if you planned on getting the tow package anyways.

I'm tempted to go grab one of the '17s still on the lot, but I wasn't planning to pick one up just yet, so basically I'm not getting a new truck now.

It's a sad day for sure. The 4cyl/5spd combo built Toyota's reputation for reliability. MSRP and resale values are still based on that reputation. I had to go out of state to find one that wasn't claimed before delivery. Based on the anecdotal evidence of this forum, it seemed like Toyota wasn't building enough of them.

I hope now to never wreck mine, it would near impossible finding a clean used one. This is just another way for Toyota to push us into TRDs. . The Utility version is just a package on the 7513, so the 2.7L 5MT is effectively dead for 2018.

Seems like to me the only people who wanted one now didn't have familys and are single. Thats a very small market these days considering every wants bigger and more room. I would only want one in about 14 years. But the 4cyl would still probably keep me from buying one.

"How is the price increase justifiable if the website says " at no additional cost."

It means, "well yeah, we increased the cost of the vehicle...you just dont need to pay extra to get it in a package"

Not sure why one would need this BUT
Just make sure your steering wheel is 10" or more away from your chest.

Test drove a 17 recently...Im 6'1 so the comfortable seat setting for me seemed to result in steering wheel being a bit too far away...maybe I just needed to make other adjustments.

I've come to terms with it. I think part of the reason is regulatory, CAFE, emissions, DOT, etc. sort of dictates manufacturers focus on high margin configurations since the base models don't offset the corporate costs. Also I think we're out of step with the truck market, which used to be about utility and is now a substitute for regular cars. I mean, seriously, heated fucking seats in a pickup? I'm still stuck in the mindset that I was giddy about getting a truck with overdrive, A/C and power steering.

Somehow at 31 I feel like I'm too old for the way things are progressing. I just don't understand what people have against a basic, reliable configuration. People are more concerned with these stupid gadgets and crawl control so the truck just drives itself out of the mess you've gotten into. I feel like I've got nothing left to look forward to in the automotive industry.

I'd be very interested in seeing sales figures between the different model configurations.

Lots of retrogrouches in here. Daydreaming about the golden yesteryears. Forgetting how many lives new gadgets, gizmos have saved. Comfort and efficiencies they bring. I'm surprised some of you like vehicles at all.

For me, I'm fine with progress.

I'm fine with TSS and other safety features. I used to drive a built '75 Celica that had zero sense of safety and it was terrifying, so I'm willing to compromise there. Safety, comfort, efficiency, I'm not against these things in general. Is anyone saying that the V6 or the automatic in the Tacoma is efficient though? They don't seem to be from what I've read. Not that the I4 5MT is either, but you have proven reliability there. The trucks do well with that combination. I just think that most new truck buyers would feel like they've done something by pushing a button on the dash and the truck driving itself flawlessly through MOAB rather than doing it themselves. I like progress, but I don't like being disconnected from the actual process.

Anyway, I'll quit crying about not being able to get the truck that I want anymore. I've made my stance known at least. :p

The rate of traffic fatalities has continued to go down for decades, but the rate slowed in the 1970s. The rate of injury and death due to distracted driving has started to go up the past few years, though. So it seems the period from about 1980 to 2010 is the sweet spot where cars gained seat belts, crash testing, air bags but before all the extraneous stuff that takes attention or lets the driver focus less on driving. I know for me I prefer a stick shift primarily because it helps keep my mind from wandering. I stay engaged with traffic, anticipating a need to shift. My suspicion is that all this TSS stuff will have little or even negative affect on accidents as people begin to rely on them while fiddling with infotainment junk instead of paying attention. See, the thing is, I actually do really like driving my truck and I dislike all the stuff that disconnects me from doing that. The throttle by wire, the ABS, electric windows (how is turning the key on to roll a window down better?) seem to get in the way more than anything.
