What's the general feeling on bed racks for tents: put the tent above cab height and keep the bed open, or half hight and loose bed space but get some protection for the tent?

I have mine set where half the tent (main body) sticks past the cab and then the ladder... So it's steps kinda gradually... keep in mind that in short beds you have barely any space to put the window/overhang rods if you set it too low. There are work-arounds like bungee cords from the window overhang to fixed points on the roof/roof rack or bending the rods.

The tent doesn't really need much protection. There are a ton of people who have mounted where the tent is completely exposed.

I hadn't considered the window rods. I'm looking at a 4 man tent, so even with the long bed it will be tight.

I built my rack cab height to maximize storage, and figured I could add a wind deflector to combat excessive drag.
Now things have changed. I do not want the weight up there for wheeling, and wife refuses to sleep in a RTT . So it appears I am getting a camping trailer

Camping trailer is always an option.

I'm worried about weight (center of gravity) and trail damage up there.

@The Hunter fully pulled me (hanging onto his bumper) and his back wheel off the ground on a off camber section where everyone else without a rtt above cab didn't have this butt puckering moment...

But i dig the look of it above the cab and the storage space so

^^ This. Limb risers help assist branches up over the truck. They are great on tight trails and assuming snow covered trees when the weight of snow is on the branch, this winter being my first winter with them but have been through snow covered trails in the pines and seems like all the branches are hanging in the trail. Actually saved some abuse on my ditch lights at AOAA when I was there. My greatest interest is to protect future solar panel on the hood.

I had a tentative plan to build a 6x12 utility trailer into a camper, complete with inside kitchen and shower/toilet. That got squashed as I was told it was too small

I was thinking of adding some tubing to my snorkel to get the precleaner above the cab. Surprised I still have a precleaner after some if the branches I have been hit with.

The truck literarlly all went to shit at once lol.

Where do I start? Motor leaking oil from front driver side. Couldnt see the source of the leak when I crawled under it.

Trans is also leaking now; worse than the motor.

And to top it off, it all started when the motor started misfiring. Initially thought maybe a bad tank of gas, but it got progressively worse. It seems a little better when it first fires up then gets worse as it gets hot. Maybe I'm making it up, but also seems to be running hotter.
I changed the ICM in the distributor, thinking maybe that was it. But as I opened up the distributor, everything looked pretty good.
I'm now going under the assumption that it's carb related (750 edelbrock carb)....edelbrock being the key word lol. But having to never fucked w/ a carbed motor before, I'm very inexperienced w/ diagnosing it. It's been running flawlessly for the past year. Then like I said, everything went to shit all at once.

Yea for sure. He almost knows how to get in the tent on his own, he can get his back legs to the second sometimes third rung on the ladder

    IMG_2246.jpg

Sad story. While camping over the weekend after putting the fire out with water and going to bed, my 4 1/2 month pregnant wife woke up at like 3am freaking out she was breathing in smoke.. I didn't really feel it but she wanted to go try to sleep in the cab cuz she couldn't get over the smoke. The pup and I slept the rest of the night in the tent and my wife came back in a few hours later. We we then woken at 7am of our dog sounding like it was choking or couldn't breath.. we popped up got him out side and tried to give him water. He calmed down a bit but still has a nasty wheeze. We think he might of had smoke inhalation from the night. Wife is taking him to the vet today to see what's up. From the charred logs I poured water on to the pile of ash in the morning, that fire must have smoldered all night. Wind must have switched at some point and blew the smoke twords the tent and having the window hoods open and window half unzipped the smoke found its way into the tent. It's crazy what happened and I could smell the smoke but wasn't bothered by it. Hoping for the best and Ziggy isn't permanently affected.

I would actually prefer to drop my snorkel scoop more if I could. Already cut 1.5" off till the skewp meet the first curve on the frontside. This would let the limb riser cable go over the skewp. And my smaller prefilter doesn't work out that great to line up the cable where I want it. So potentially would choose prefilter over limb risers when the trip calls for it, like our west or specifically a return to our Canada trip @JLink @Wheelspinner

@Chux next time, if at all possible.... try and avoid using water and try shoveling sand/dirt on top of the fire pit
