Hey y'all so my 1999, 4 cyl, 2.7 L, SR5, Tacoma does not have a tachometer and I have no clue what it revs out to. I'm looking to get an aftermarket tach put in but I need to know roughly what it redlines at. I've searched online for a few days now but I haven't found anything on it. Do any of y'all know? Thanks.

I've never understood why some manual transmission vehicles come without a tachometer, makes no sense lol. I'm sure someone on here has one and can let you know. Do you have the factory owner's manual? I would think that info would be in there

No need for an "aftermarket" one. Just go to a wrecking yard and get one with a tach from another tacoma.

I did that only old '97 5 lug. It was a 5 speed poverty spec with no tach. I went to a wrecking yard, got one off a slightly newer truck. Even had the fancy which background.

It was all plug and play, no modifications necessary. Just make sure you keep track of the mileage, so if you sell it you can document the change in mileage.

If you install something like a scan gauge, ultra gauge or the torque app you'll get a more accurate RPM reading than a tach.

I don't know the textbook red line, but when you hit the ECU red line you'll know it because of the fuel cut.

The only manual I've owned didn't have a tach.

TBH, I don't know why anybody thinks they're necessary? Unless you have hearing impairment, I guess. You can hear the engine otherwise. Tachs are handy, but if you can't drive without one then you probably should work on being a better driver.

Redline isn't the time to shift, and if you hit it, you'll know.

    Didn’t have a tach

Shifted by ear and it was fine

When I have a tach, I hardly look at it. Always have shifted by ear

If you're bouncing these engines off the rev limiter to find your shift points, you're doing it wrong.

Not only that, but the power curve levels off before then anyway, so you're not doing anything but putting undue stress on the motor.

I agree they aren't a necessity but it seems odd that they come standard on autos but not always on manuals, where a manual driver is usually more aware of shift patterns and what not. Its nice to have but as I'm sure anyone who knows how to drive a manual is aware, once you get a feel for your vehicle you shift out of habit and the sound of your engine and don't rely so much on the tach, if at all.

I keep an eye on it mostly when I'm wheeling in 4lo and want to keep my RPMs in a certain range, it's a nice feature to be able to glance at. My old Dakota didn't have a tach but had a light that would blink when you were 'supposed' to shift gears lol.

And I definitely agree that no one should use redline as a shift point, that'd be a great way to shorten the motors lifespan

My 04's manual has a page toward the back that has recommended shift intervals for manual drivers (ideal speed/RPMs to change gears for maximum efficiency)...I don't recall if the redline info was there but if it was, that's the spot it'd be I bet

Oh heck no I'm not shifting at red-line that would be stupid. I can shift it fine as I've been driving it for almost two years now. It's not that I need a tach, but like eon_blue said, it's just kind of nice to have to glance at it sometimes. I want one so I can drive as economically as possible and so that if anyone else needs to drive my truck, they can have a tach. This was actually the truck I learned manual on so I learned without a tach. But, the reason I want to know where it redlines at is so when I get a tach, it can have at least close to the correct range on it.

I didn't "need" a tach either, been driving in for a long time without one, but like you, it felt weird not to have a tach on a 5 speed.

Get a dash cluster from a wrecking yard like I said. It's literally plug and play, at least it was for me. I had a 97, and I *think* the new one came out of an 01.

You won't have to run wires, or make any custom brackets to get an aftermarket one installed. I installed it in teh parking lot of the wrecking yard (to make sure it would fit) in about 10 minutes. Plus, it's super clean looking (beacuse, um, it's a stock dash cluster). The other option, like others said, would be to use an OBDII and an app like Torque, but that's not a permanent install.

Redlines about 5800 but there's no need to rev past 4K or so.
