First of all, there's no such thing as a "Recharge". AC systems are SEALED. If it is not working properly it more than likely has a LEAK or failing component.

I suggest staying away from the "Autozone AC Recharge" crap as it has sealants in it that will cause Black death to your AC system

I used the one from AutoZone in my 1st Gen. Pretty easy application. The AC was blowing outside temp before and after the charge (or whatever) it cooled down considerably. Not as good as new though. Kept me and the family cool when we went out to Joshua Tree a couple months back and it still blows cold when I sat at the border for 2 hours last Sunday.

Don't know if it's good for the system or not but it worked for me.

It's just a band aid. It will leak out again eventually.

Should have added some dye to it to find the leak.

After about 5 years almost every AC needs a recharge unless you don't use it but here in SoCal I've been using it quite a bit so I believe it needs a "fill"
Also if you look under your hood you'll find specifications for a type of recharge/ fill and oil.
I will post a pic later

Its called system maintenance as there is a small amount of oil in the system to keep the compressor lubed. So yes an oil change (Re-charge) is a wrongful used term. Do you recharge your refrigerator every 5 years? Freon/refrigerant is never suppose to be exposed to the atmosphere.

Just buy a hose with gauge that goes on the 134-a cans and charge it when it leaks off, did that for like 3 years in a Saturn I had as a work car, didn't feel like fixing it right and bought cheap 134-a at Walmart cheap so the three years cost me like $30 and would blow ice cold most of the summer, it starts not being as cold, top it off.

    No.

But you throw the Refrigerator away after it stops blowing cold.

I'll have to do some real research.
Thanks for your responses that we're not helpful

Get it properly evacuated, deep vacuum and recharged. And a shot of dye. The dye will show a leak if there is one. Take it to a mechanic. Ac is something the average joe shouldn't mess with.

You throw the fridge away because the cost for the parts to fix it is not far off from getting a brand new fridge.

I actually just replaced the compressor in my father's 1996 Dodge Ram. I checked for leaks with a vacuum pump and recharged the system with an appropriate manifold set. I also used it on my 1991 Toyota pickup. Worked great and got the A.C. blowing cold again.

OP, If you're adding more refrigerant to your system because it got low, then there's a leak. The store bought recharge cans will only work temporarily. You need to find the leak with a dye, address it, and recharge it.

Make sure you have a clean cabin air filter and a clean condenser coil.

Plain and simple, if you have to recharge the system with more refrigerant, you have a leak. If you use those recharge cans they will work but you have not addressed the moisture that has been introduced into the system. Pulling a vacuum then recharging by weight with dye is the proper way to do it. If not you are shortening the life of the compressor and not actually fixing the problem.

    I am only a Refrigeration/AC mechanic, what would I know? :D

Mechanic here as well. If the OP doesn't want to listen to a pro then he will pay some guy like us to fix his fuck up. It will end up costing him more than the original evac and recharge.
