I don't know why so many people are discouraging this, you have a reasonable expectation of what the MPG is going to be so you had to have done the math on the commute costs and still determined that you want a TRD OR providing the ride/drivability for that duration on a consistent basis won't be an issue.

I have almost 18k on my truck since I bought it in January. I don't do a consistent daily commute because I work from home, but I do drive it very frequently on 3 hour+ one way trips and I love it. I don't think it is uncomfortable on long rides at all. Ride and comfort is good, despite people complaining 3rd doesn't have power, it has plenty of passing power at highway speeds (which was important for me). The first 2 months I had the truck I was doing a weekly drive out of town 400 miles round trip and 50% or more of those miles were in the snow/ice in 4WD and it handled great.

If you are okay with the commute costs, which I have to assume you are since you are hear and those aren't your questions, I'd recommend it.

Thanks! I've actually been considering 5100s, because I'm tired of waiting for the Billies to pop up in my area.

Problem with that, I'd also want to do new deaver packs (have air bags to support those, I hear the J66 are weak but ride nice).

Thanks for the advice, I was starting to look at supplementing my truck with a sports car but knowing the Tacoma is just like it and corners like one I can just get that and get the best of both worlds! Would love to hear my passengers be confused and say "wow this handles like a Corvette or Porsche Carrera" when riding in a tacoma!

I take it you have never ridden in a pretty much any car in the last 20 years? Most anything even a Prius will out handle a truck...

Good one...!! Just can't tell when someone's exaggerating a little to make a point, eh..??

I love the truck and would not trade it for a freakin' Corvette or a Porsche....!! They are junk..! :amen:

I've got a 2017 TRD Sport 2wd and I travel over 600 miles a week for work. I average 23mpg per tank cruising between 75 and 80 mph.

I've driven my truck from Moab Utah, to Wyoming, back home to the Bay Area in California in a single day and it was very comfy (that's non-stop driving from 7am to 1:30am with a time change for good measure!). I also drive 3-6 hours to go camping fairly often. Every time I am so happy I traded in my old Subaru for this truck. In the Subaru I would arrive at my destinations stiff and with a headache, and I'm not even that old! Now I show up as rested and comfortable as you can be.

That being said, driving a heavy truck (yes I fully understand the Tacoma is considered a mid-size) in traffic is... shitty. It takes a lot of patience to be enjoyable. It also drops the very livable 22mpg to 16mpg unless you are very very careful with the throttle. But, it is nice to sit up higher and be able to see around cars.

I do about 25k a year. I’m looking for a civic or Prius for a commuter car now, 100mi a day gets expensive, real quick. The gas savings after a year will have paid for a cheap beater car, and kept miles off my truck.

I do 90 miles+/- a day and mostly highway I get 20mpg, but thats driving i64 in West Virginia(Hills) and with cruise set at 80 it cruises in 6th at 2 grand, but with the hills will kick down to 4th and run up to 3200-3500 rpms, so if I drove slower maybe get 21-22 at 70. It rides good and I have the SR dcsb v6 4x4 Cheapest(ish) it does have convince package, v6 4x4 DC I could buy. If ur buying for gas mileage, don't. If u want/need a truck and will drive it every day and like I did couldn't do tundra's 14mpg then, it's a good choice.

I used to. Just over 100 miles round trip and 2-3 hours worth of traffic on the way home. I have the offroad with the softer suspension and it was a nice ride and handled perfectly.

Now my commute is 6 miles round trip and on a completely different suspension.

I have a 17 TRDOR DCLB, and it is comfortable on the road and handles great. I would have no problem with driving it 100+ miles a day if I had to. Your mileage will be around 20 (assuming a 4x4, a little more if a 2wd), and, obviously, there are more fuel efficient options out there, but not pickups. As they say, you pays your money and takes your choice!

Lmao, the responses in this thread crack me up. American wastefulness at its best. I love my truck and understand why folks say drive it 100s of miles a week, but let's look at the resources wasted driving a truck, even at 25 mpgs, which I am stunned that folks are getting with a v6 taco. On the highway I get shit mileage, back roads 50 to 60 I am seeing 20 plus, in town 17ish.

I work hard for what little money I make (education field) and need to be smart about how I spend it, for those who wipe their asses with 100s, well how bout as a society we use that money better than just filling the oil tycoons wallets.

    Ok, I'll shut up now.:crapstorm:

It's funny seeing the replies here, if you were to ask this same question on Bogleheads or Mr Money Mustache forums they would bury you for "stupidity".

Nice truck compliments? I get them every day in my tundra. And everyone knows a big beautiful tundra is a panty dropper. Have even had a few females tell me my tundra is a real panty dropper....and they were proved right. Not so much with my old tacoma

    2017 - OR about 20 miles a gallon
Seats aren't super great - read - COMFY but that can be fixed by covers I'm told.
Go for it and hope gas doesn't go back up to $4.
Plus you can carry lotsa stuff.

    Reserected from the dead.
The second gen Tacoma must get better mpg than the 1st gens. Both my '98 and 2004 got 18mpg on our flat, Michigan highways doing a very steady 80 mph.

My 2nd gen Tundra with the 5.7 gets 15.5.

The comfort and power makes me take the Tundra on trips.

The only advantage is the Tacoma is easier to park. The mpg difference is not enough for me to worry about.
