Show me your sources of that.

Show me the science that says synthetic lubricates any better than the exact weight conventional oil at the correct OCI.
Talking daily drivers here, not professional race cars or diesel trucks.

I'm confused @PackCon. Your source and link directly contradict your position and completely supports synthetic as being a better oil. And for more reasons than OCI. A few of them (from your link) being:
    Start-up temperatures
    Cold temperature performance
Ability to maintain similar viscosity over a wide range of temperatures

I don't know if it specifically "lubricates" better, but apparently it performs better. What am I missing?

Not necessarily. i see the world "overkill" used in that article at least 2-3 times. The cold temperature thing is true, but it was noted at below 0 degrees at startup where synthetic kicks in and has the advantage. (where does the OP live? that might help in his decision.)

If he lives in a relatively warm climate and changes his oil regularly (5k) there really is no advantage to using synthetic from how I read that article, but I am no oil expert

I don't disagree. But I was selfish and read it from my perspective and not OP's. I live in a cold climate where below freezing and below zero temps are common.

    No it doesn't. He states:
Synthetics may have same advantages in extreme weather coditions (ie below -30F), turbo charged engines, race cars, and when one wants to increase OCI.

Daily driving really makes no difference.

Other parts of the site go on to discuss studies done by Blackstone Labs on various differences between conventional and synthetic. Their studies show as long at the oil is changed at its intended intervals there is no difference in engine protection. Of course this means outside of the factors listed above.

Ahh...these engine oil threads never get old :D

Some people seem to be stuck several decades in the past where the struggle of finding a good engine oil was more of a reality.

These days, however, pretty much any oil that meets the minimum specifications required for the vehicle will be ok. So much has evolved in the oil industry. Heck, I've even seen guys running the walmart brand of engine oil for tens of thousands of miles with no issues:eek:.

With regular dyno oil, changing the oil and filter at regular intervals is more important than the brand of the oil (as long as it meets the specs required for the vehicle). Synthetic can go longer...which minimizes waste.

I believe I owe everybody an apology at this point. Lol I just wanted to know what all the high milage Taco guys ran and if it would protect the engine better for short trips, but instead this evolved into another oil debate.

I have 2 free oil changes from the dealer for buying my truck. So I'm just going to roll with the 5W-30 synthetic. I see no reason not to especially when it's free. In order to keep the warranty, I'm going to stick with the recommended change intervals, but once the free oil changes are up I'm going to do it myself, keep my receipts, and document that it was done by a buddy of mine who is working on his ASE certification right now.

Not sure how many sources you need me to give you for you to realize your wrong but here ya go. If you actually read it you will find that it also states that synthetic oil molecules are much more round and similarly shaped than conventional thus providing better and longer wear protection.

Your reference does not show that synthetic oils protect an engine from normal wear and tear as opposed to conventional. They assume that but don't show it.
It states they last longer because of its properties so in other words longer OCI.

For normal everyday driving there is no evidence synthetic protects an engine more than conventional provided they are changed at the correct interval.

Do your own research buddy, im not going to waste my time anymore doing it for you when i did it for 2 years in tech school. Its a proven fact that synthetic is better at protecting against wear cold and warm. If you want to put crap in your truck to save 5 bucks then go ahead lol

    The fun oil threads.

Follow the intervals recommended by Toyota.

Use only TOYOTA branded oils. Only oil you should ever put in your truck. :homer:

Don't pick fights with people when you can't hold on an intellectual discussion about it. Don't call people out for being stupid while making general sweeping statements.

Saying synthetic is better is so general it holds no meaning. Better for what? Wiping your ass?
Specifics are important. The OP isn't an ice trucker with a turbo diesel, and he doesn't drive 200mph to work with a heavily modified engine.

Your article talked about the benefits of extreme temp differences as well as the benefit of using a synthetic lower weight oil over a conventional. Never showed 5w-30 synthetic made any difference over 5w-30 convention at intended OCI.

They must not teach science in tech school.

Id trust a tech school taught buy 30 year ASE techs and countless manuals and the companys that produce the product over a guy with zero qualifications on an online forum haha. Here is an artical buy Amsoil and it literally says "Synthetics don’t contain the impurities and molecular irregularities inherent to conventional oils." in the 1st few sentences. Its not made up bull shit buddy its a fact. You need to pull your head out of your rear end and accept that you were misinformed and move on while learning something new.

Oh and here is that "Lab testing" you keep flapping your wings about.
