    I was a bit disappointed on my camping trip when it didn't run the hairdryer. It did come in handy for the airmattress though.

    also found out that it'll power my 3 gallon pancake air compressor. should be nice for those air ups after the trails

    Can you upgrade the inverter?

    You have a 130 amp Alternator
    You draw 3.4 amps at 400W
    And a 1000w @ 115V + 8.6 amps

    Would that mean you could realistically put a 1000W inverter in there?

    During a hurricane a few months back i used mine to charge cell phones and a portable dvd player. Last friday i used it on my power drill. I pre-drilled some holes on a 4 inch post to mount a gate for a fence, no problems what so ever....

    I was kinda surprised to find that it ran my drill just fine. Which came in handy considering we didnt have a cordless drill and were no where near an outlet.

    used it to run the shop vac a few times but it always ends up shutting off so i guess the shop vac can draw too much, and to charge rc truck batteries dont think i have found any other use yet.

    LEER Shell with dome lights operated with 3 way switches, aux backup lights with relay and 3 position switch, modified wiring to compass/temp display and clock to include switch that disables dimming function (poor man's DRL solution), Scan Gauge 2
    They should have at least put an outlet in the cab like someone posted about. If you are in construction, it could work great for those cordless power tool chargers. Otherwise, if you don't have a camper shell it's kinda worthless. I'm not gonna leave my cell in the bed to charge while I am driving.

    At 400 watts the Inverter is drawing around 33 amps, not 3.4.
    It is putting out around 3.4 amps.
    A 1000w inverter would draw around 83 amps at full load. And yes the truck could power one, at least for a while. And most inverters will shut down if the supply drops below an acceptable voltage.

    I'm not sure what setting my friend had it on, but it would not run it. Kept knocking off and I had to press the button in the truck again. After 3 tries, we realized it wasn't going to work.

    I little review on part of ohm's law: (Sorry for being so geeky)

    P=Power (Watts)
    I=Current (Amps)
    V=Voltage (Volts)

    Watts = Volts x Amps (P=VI)
    Amps = Watts / Volts (I=P/V)
    Volts = Watts / Amps (V=P/I)

    So on the output side you can have 3.48 amps running at 115 volts which will give you 400 watts.

    Not calculating the inverter overhead, it will require more input amperage because there is less voltage from the truck battery. To get 400 watts you will need 33 1/3 amps at 12 volts. (Actually it's more like 14.3 volts when truck is running in order to charge batteries.)

    Now think about why you need 220-240 Volt power to run an oven, Central A/C, and electric dryer in your house. You can get double the wattage with the same amperage. Of course your utility meter measures the wattage you use and you get billed for it.

    I'm also pretty sure that the 400 watt inverter can do a burst of 600 watts (5.2 amp draw) for a short time - maybe a second or 2. Electric motors nearly double the amperage draw they are rated for when they start up. Even a 3 amp rated motorized tool could trip the inverter breaker because it's pulling 6 amps to start up. Inverters and motors are typically rated on continuous watts/amps and not start up watts/amps.

    I was able to make a small 4 cup pot of coffee. It seemed to operate a bit slower than usual, but worked. The bean grinder worked like a champ!!
