What did you pay for your Re-Gear?

Is it more cost effective to just get the 3rd member and clamshell form ECGS rather than having to buy the gears, master kits and regear labor?

 

Ditto to the above.. I just put a deposit on Nitro Gears via the GB but they front set is out for another 6-8 weeks. If it's more cost effect to swap out a fully assembled 3rd, then I'm taking this route.. Is there a part number where we can look this up?

 

Agreed on the fully assembled route too, waiting to hear back on the shop hours comparing costs to build vs. 'swapping the pumpkins'. And I just assumed front (non locker) and rear (with locker). Do I really need to also do a reverse for another few hundred?

 

If you are 4wd, yes, you need to match gears in the front and rear diffs. ECGS says 2 week lead time and about 3 days for shipping.

This is the front diff. It is an IFS reverse clamshell.

 

I need to learn the differences here - never took autoshop. :-|

For example, I figured I needed to buy the 8.75" 4.88 with eLocker for the Rear and the Auto non-elocker for the front? BUt then there's the 8" reverse IFS clamshell. I just want to be educated on the differences. Help?

 

Bummed about the GB - I was a part of it too. I read on another thread a few weeks back that Nitro was having issues delivering the front gears and there was a delay - guess Nitro can't keep up with demand we all want to fix the issue. Maybe Yukon will get in the game. Nitro will have to make a big move in cost reduction before I get back into the regear game after their GB f'k up.

 

Yukon is already making the gears for the 2016+ Six States in Utah gave me quote using Yukon gears.

 

Agreed.. I just backed out for a full refund.. The fully assembled 3rd member looks more inviting since I can install that myself and save a good chunk of labor $$.. Re-gearing is work of art, time, and tools. Unfortunately, I don't have that skills or tools to be practicing on my daily driver.

let us know how this works out. shipping could be an expense but if it is less cost and time it could be the best option.

With a diff that has less than about 20k miles, most installs don't require a master install kit. Typically they just need shims and sometimes carrier bearings (basically a mini kit). This saves a good chunk of cash, especially when doing 2 diffs. I'm just mentioning this since it is in the 3rd gen section so I'm assuming that a decent amount people's trucks are much lower miles than a 1st or 2nd gen looking to regear. Just my $.02 for those that care

 

So if you just regear the rear differential and don’t engage 4wd can you drive it without rehearing the front? I’d like to get the benefit of shorter gears and faster acceleration while I save up for the front regear.

I admit, im not a mechanic, but why should the front ratio matter if you aren’t engaging 4wd? Aren’t the front wheels spinning independent of the transmission in 2wd mode?
