Rattle in dash is driving me mental!!!

I'd try to narrow down the area before I had the winshield pulled. May be Clips - may be dash, may be Wipers/piviots, etc. , May be inside or outside.

Pull the glove box and leave it out. try a ride.

Get a couple of large bath towels and bunch one up under each wiper. Take a ride.

Run the Wipers until thy reach the top - then pull the fuse - and take a ride.

Open the hood and take a real good look at the firewall - anything hanging?/loose? banging?

Push a bath towel inside between the dash and the glass. Only do it a 1 foot area at a time. Take a ride, then move the towel and repeat until your whole dash area is checked.

IT would at least be nice to be sure it's the dash and approx where it is - if possible.

i have seen that people are doing the foam noodle thing. in fact, someone on here I think did a youtube on it. my question is.... does the foam not sqeak?

 

I appreciate the advice. The rattle will stop if I use my hand an apply pressure to the top of the dash in the area between where the radio and windshield while I'm driving down the road.

Check this thread I put up a long time ago. Forget pulling the head-unit until you do the rubber hose trick first. That will probably solve it by itself

If you have an '05 to '10 you might very well have the rattle due to the bracket holding the pass air bag. There is a TSB for it, T-SB-0087-10. The problem occurs because the felt buffer strips in the bracket move or become unglued and allow the air bag case to rattle within the bracket. The felt pieces adhere to the tabs of the bracket. The fix is to put them back in place or put new ones on. I was able to do it on my '09 with the airbag in place and using lights and mirrors to see. I got the felt pieces from the kitchen junk drawer and cut them to order. I had to do this fix again about 4 years later because the cheap adhesive on the felt strips failed.

 

So, safelite came out and ended up NOT pulling the windshield. Instead he puts some rubber strips in between the dash and windshield. No more clicking noise.

How do I get more power out of my 2.7 liter 4-cylinder? Any other suggestions?

 

This fixed my dash rattle! Went to Lowe's and bought 5/8" Backer Rod (Caulk Saver). It comes in 20' lengths, $3.48. Worked like a charm! I just ran one single strip across the windshield and pushed it as far as it would go, with out using too much force. You can't see it unless you have your close to the dash, looks factory unless you know what you're looking for.

 

My Grandfather had a rattle in his Buick Lacrosse for the longest time. Drove him NUTS.

Took 3 trips to the dealer before they fixed it.


He left a peach pit in the ash tray.

I have an '06 PreRunner. My rattle turned out to be the glove box latch mechanism. I knew it was something in the glove box because when I put my hand on it and applied pressure it would stop the rattle. I put a couple of drops of liquid wrench in the latch mechanism. The rattle stopped so go figure. I've never taken the latch apart but I figure there are some small parts that the oil binds together. When the rattle starts up again after a year or so it gets a few more drops. Hope this helps someone.

They sell a "white grease" in a spray can with a small applicator tube taped to the side of the can. The grease should last longer than a liquid and be less drippy. IMO

after years i just came back to say that post 16 was my solution. My hi ge was loose and when id go over any bump it would rattle. stuffed a rag in there and silence.....wow....ive owned this truck for 250,000klm of driving and since 2009. Finally Silence.

So I've been living with a dash rattle for a long time too. It sounded like a bag worth of Legos bouncing around in my dash. It would stop if I put a little pressure up top near the airbag outline. I could tap on the dash and hear it if I wanted to. So I took the glove box and the upper line unbolted with three bolts. I then found a little body tab up just under the windshield. I shoved a spare piece of 3/8 fuel line in between the tab and the plastic dash. Completely cured the problem. Only took about 10 minutes to do too! Hopefully it'll help someone else with the same rattle.

 

My rattle was the actual dash panel.
The one just above the paper I jammed in there.
I haven’t yet taken it apart to see what’s actually loose.
