Edit title: anyone have a Hayden fan clutch?

Has anyone here had a bad fan clutch? Mine passes all the tests but I have a hunch it’s bad. If you replaced your fan clutch, what where your symptoms ?

If it "passes all the tests" (which tests?) what makes you feel it is bad?

It is quite common for viscous fan clutches to last 200k or more miles...

If the motor overheats while idling or traveling slowly (4x4'ing) but stays cool at highway speeds, it could be the fan. That's what led to me replace mine which fixed the issue.

I copied this from another post but

With the truck at 200 degrees I shut off the motor and the fan nearly immediately stops once the motor is off. Also my truck CAN idle for 20 mins straight with the ac on and not get over 200.
-it has the same amount of friction cold/warm/hot which is not much. The fan is noticeable loud on a cold start but never after that.

My issue was when off-roading in 4lo it gets super hot like 210-220 and once to over 230. It also gets hot over 210 going up inclines or with a load on the motor.

I got into contact with the previous owner and he said it went to the delearship 3 times for a similar issue. His problem was it would get too hot when driving slow or in stop and go traffic. He said it would go down if he revved the motor in nuetral. The dealership replaced the thermostat (100k miles) but he said it still happened after that. I can sit and idleall day long without breaking 200....BUT this really makes me think it’s the fan??

It never overheats while idling only if off-roading. It doesn’t really overheat but runs too hot.

I had a bad fan clutch at 173,000 miles. My AC felt weak when I was sitting in traffic but at highway speeds it worked great. So I had someone turn off my truck while I looked at the fan clutch and it would free spin for for 15-20 seconds after shut off. Being able to spin it really easily and a brown stain across the underside of the hood (from when the fan clutch seal blew and sprayed out all of the silicone oil) were what told me I needed a new one lol. I didn't experience any overheating while idling though, in fact my temp needle never moved from center.

hmm...might be that the fan isn't working at 100% but just well enough to keep it from getting too hot. If that's the case, it's only a matter of time before it gets worse. Assuming it's the fan, that is

Check the fan clutch in front of where the flange bolts up to your pulley. If the seal is bad you could see some oil seepage from where I circled in the photo.

I have checked and I do not see anything and I also do not see any leaking from the water pump. I mean I could just do the water pump/fan clutxh/t stat and maybe a radiator but I’d rather fix the part causing the issue rather than doing the entire thing.

The truck has 193k miles on the original water pump

Thermostat changed at 110-120k ish miles

Ok that makes sense mine stopped immediately after the engine turns off. My ac isn’t very cold but it doesn’t change between idle/highway

The temperature variations you describe are normal under the circumstances you report. Concern over these normal excursions are the primary reason they switched from real temperature (and oil pressure) gauges to "idiot lights", and binary and non-linear faux ECT and o/p "gauges".

But overheating on the trail when I was with multiple other tacomas and they weren’t even over 200 yet I’m over 230....that’s why I’m worried mainly.

It went all the way to the red and I had to shut the truck off....can’t be normal

My clutch was bad at 70k miles. It was running warm while sitting, warmer still while offroad at low speeds and high drag. The A/C didn't work well at idle/low speed and the trans temps climbed under the same circumstances. Easy way to diagnose it: with the engine good and hot turn off the motor. Immediately try to turn the fan by hand. If it spins freely the clutch is bad. If there is quite a bit of resistance it could be fine.

It doesn’t spin free. It has the same resistance as cold. I would say if you spin it it goes from the 12 position to the 3/4 position

It is hard to spin by hand when hot. If it's the same cold or hot than it's definitely bad.

With a new fan clutch and extra trans cooler my truck never gets of 195 coolant and 160 transmission.

Even though it is the same as cold/hot it does not free wheel and does stop spinning as soon as the motor shuts off.

The fact that the previous owner said the truckcwould start to overheat in stop and go and would rev the motor in nuetral leafs me to believe fan??

Or is it water pump or radiator?

I had it idling for 20 mins today while it was 95 out and it was 199 when I got back to the truck.....tranny cooler is on order too

How hot were you before the new clutch?

All the way "to the red" is over 230°, perform the check ericd suggested. How many miles on your truck?
