I think there is maybe another issue with tow points. The bumpers come rated from factory for a certain max, I think maybe 1,500lbs with 150lbs tongue weight. The receiver hitches come rated for more, 6,500lbs for the V6. The aftermarket bumpers are generally not rated at all, but that is almost certainly because the testing process would just cost too much and so even though they are probably all way overbuilt and can handle more than the truck, they don't get 6,500lbs wrote on them. So you couldn't sue if wanted to blame the plate bumper folks for something having to do with towing. That does not mean they wouldn't pass testing, just that they never got tested.

For a self taught welder, that weld looks great! (Coming from someone who hasn't welded much haha)

I have a question about that stuff, and it's directed at anyone who might have an answer.

I have been doing a decent amount of work to the truck since owning (Auxiliary fuse box, lights, bed cap, platform, etc) and with it, a lot of money has been spent on modifications or items that will be stored on the vehicle (compressor, recovery gear, kitchen gear, etc).

Anybody else with mods / carrying a lot of extra gear all the time, did you tell your insurance? Do insurance companies even ensure extras?

My truck is fairly new to me, and I have full coverage on the truck (~$1,300/yr). I am planning on using the truck as a camper for long term camping, and I am thinking of adding all the extra shit into my insurance as protection in the case that someone steals everything/breaks it. For reference; ~$5,800 in modifications so far, and ~$1,000 in equipment/gear that would be stored on the vehicle. And potentially another $4,000 if I start working again haha

Or should I go to plpd and save the money myself in case I crash/damage the truck offroad?

Lots of questions and not the best written I know...

PS: I paid the truck off last year, so I own it outright

Depending on who you're with, some companies don't cover (or even insure) modified vehicles.

There was a big thing about this a year go in one of the wheeling groups I'm involved with. If your insurance company doesn't know your truck has modifications done to it they can terminate your insurance if you get into an accident and then you're royally fucked.

People say "just don't tell 'em" but if you get into an accident and its lifted there's a chance you'll be paying out of pocket for the damages done (on both ends). I hope you didn't rear end a Ferrari!

I imagine you could get it appraised, and have it insured for whatever that value is?

Sweetness! Good work on the bumper

As for the insurance question, Anytime somethings been stolen "out" of my car ( besides the stereo ) it was covered under the house insurance. now as for writing the thing off with all your stuff inside, I really don't know. Since it seems to vary between company's Best bet is to call up and ask I guess. I think I'm going to do that today, Call about modifications, I've only done cosmetic/electrical stuff to my truck so far, but I have plans for the usual stuff, bumpers, lift, sliders.

What were your settings for this? It looks like the weld was too cold (not enough amps/lack of penetration, as seen by the frequency of ripples) and the bead more biased towards the D ring rather than an even fillet weld. You may want to consider (and a lot of guys do this from the start) doing multiple passes to ensure maximum strength. I don't mean to be "that guy", I would just hate to see a truck damaged or worse someone hurt/killed with this letting go. Bumper looks great though! :)

Great. As a rule of thumb the leg of a fillet weld (i.e. the portion touching each work piece) should be 3/4 of the length of the thickness of your plates. So if you're doing a fillet weld on a 1 inch plate, your legs should be 3/4 inch for full strength.

Have you heard of weldingtipsandtricks on YouTube? He has some amazing content that helped me immensely when I was first learning to weld. Highly recommend checking him out.

I was very close to getting the 200DV TIG machine but found a better alternative locally. I've heard nothing but good about their stuff. In fact, I learned to TIG weld on one of their older models.

That's some handsome fella, boys were willing to dish out the $$$ for the front bumper I'm rocking the same one. As for rear I really like the angled cut idea, I would have gone a little wider with the bumper to protect your corners and tails. I believe some glass bedsides come with the same angled cut it's going to look really nice. Had a peek at my own and not sure how you could make it look clean there's a lot of stuff going on with the part that's covered by the stock bumper but I'm sure it'll turn out. For paint I recommend POR-15 as a base coat then cover with rocker guard, Its $69 for a quart at Canadian Mafuckas. Just Finished stripping and restoring my frame with my gas pressure washer, wire wheeled the entire thing, brushed clean with varsol then coated the shit out of it with POR-15. Took me 3 weeks and I did it in stages (front, mid and rear), I'm super pleased with the look my frame is brand new. Increased the trucks value and protected it from all the maritime road salt, now just to get it undercoated.
