My 6spd 2012 4.0 was a dog hauling a 18ft boat that’s why I got rid of it, it’s the manual trans. my 2006 auto had zero problems towing the same boat to the same lake on the same road

sounds like OP needed to downshift.

While it aint gonna tow like the 2500HD not even close.... it should do just fine....

I have towed a seadoo speedster 150 + gear + full tanks of gas (probably close to 2500+ lbs) 70mph up the decent grade from SLO to paso.....

I have a stick. I don't routinely tow anything like this but it's pulled a John Deere X475 with a model 45 front end loader on a 16' flat bed alright. Combined weight was about 2,800 lbs.

The problem is the 1GR doesn't make nearly enough torque at idle to pull the truck's rated weight comfortably. You have to slip the clutch a little to keep the RPM up. Once it gets moving it's not a big deal to keep it moving.

And it's not altitude, I live at 5,200' and was taking the tractor to 9,000'. It would probably struggle badly getting that much weight over the Divide, but the truck itself fully laden doesn't set any land speed records either.

But I've been driving a stick shift Toyota pickup for a long time and was able to get my tractor moved with my old truck, a 22R-E powered towing monster (not), so compared to that my Taco must feel like the 2500HD does to you. :)

That's what I'm thinking it is as well. These trucks will run at 4k all day and not break a sweat.

Oh poor 22R-E nothing. That engine was flogged harder tons of times than pulling a tractor 15 miles home in town from the dealer once. The 22R is bulletproof as long as you keep fresh coolant in it and keep after the timing chain.

Pretty sure, yeah. The 16' I had was rated 10K (tandem 5K axles, one braked axle) and I assume most places are like here in CO, anything over 3K is required to have brakes.
