I recently bought (4) ray10 wheels. I am currently waiting for my 285/75/16 Falken wildpeaks to come in. I did not purchase a fifth ray10 because I thought it is stupid to buy a nice wheel just too throw under the bed. So, now I am looking into cheap spare wheel options, my question is this:

    - Can I buy a 255/85/16 and put it on the stock spare wheel and will it still clear the front UCA if I need to use it?

Yes that works in terms of fitment but your spare will have a slightly larger diameter than your other tires so if you use it you might get a little funny wear but nothing dramatic.
I personally only use matching size spares

Does a 255/85R16 fit in the spare location? I run 235/85R16 and doesn't seem like a lot of unused space between the hitch and rear axle & brake lines. I was planning to keep a 235/85 as a spare when I eventually go to 255/85.

No, not really but you can cut the horns off some and then it will fit. There's even a sticky for it here in the cheap/free mods section

would prob best to have a matching full size spare...

not sure why you would want a 255/85 spare if your other 4 are 285/75

On an older truck I had a set of five matching 33x9.50 BFG AT. When I went to a 33x10.50 MT I bought four and I kept the best 33x9.50 as a spare. The reason for that was it was the close enough in diameter, which is really the important part about a spare, and was as thin as possible. Since I still used the stock spare location that meant it barely hung below the frame rail and never got hung up on the trail.

I agree with having 5 or even 6 (dual swing out) with exact matching spares. You can rotate them through to get that much extra life from the tires, don't have to worry about mismatching diameters on the diffs and stuff. But there are reasons to use a 255/85R16 if you only run four 285/75R16 on the road. In this case the diameter is within like 0.5% but the 255/85 is 10% narrower.

So it doesn't interfere with the axle? Cool. I was laying under there scratching my chin. I was thinking that whenever I get a bumper I would take off the hitch and that would gain the clearance.

I would also recommend the full size spare. I put a 285 75 16 on the stock spare and it fits, although if you're going for as much rear clearance as possible it does hang down a little lower but nothing major.
