hey guys. i have an 09 DC with the JBL package. i used the cd player for the first time the other day and noticed a strange sound coming from the subwoofer. it sounds like somebody is blowing into a microphone really loud when the bass hits. sometimes it sounds like static thunder. the weird thing is it doesnt do it on every bass note, only every once in a while. i cant seem to find a pattern to it and it only happens when i use the cd player. any thoughts?

Have you taken a look at it recently? because i nkow when i had my ond 92 bmw my aftermarket sub made a noise like that and it acutally had a hold in the sub. That is my only thought. Also do you have your sub turned all the way up?

i havent looked at it ever. its set up the way the factory had it set up. i'll look at it after work, but i dont know why the setting would only affect the cd player.

Well the bass hits harder when you are listening to a CD and less with the radio. So maybe it is possible that you could have a "blown" sub already but i think it is way to early for that to happen. Check after work for the small gash in the face of it and let us know.

I wouldn't even mess with it too much. Toyota should fix it for free assuming nothing aftermarket has been done to the electrical system...aka new HU or speakers....

Mudduck, I had a 2006 tacoma with the exact problem you are having. I took it in to the dealer and thay tried replacing the powered subwoofer but the sound or distortion was still noticible, then they replaced the head unit, still no help finally they had a field engineer work on it all day and he could not figure it out. The end result was that Toyota cut me a check for $500 to cover the cost of the JBL option. I listened to it that way for three years untill I traded it in last week for a 2009 tacoma with out JBL. My personal feeling is that it sounded fine with CDs that were recorded in analog but anything digital had that sound of somone blowing on a microphone. You didnt have to turn it up to hear it either. Try listeng to a analog cd like ACDC back in black then put in a modern cd .

I would have the dealer definately take a look. Where do they place the sub on the 09 DC anyways. I didnt do the factory sub but have been considering a small sub in the future.

I have the same exact problem with my 2009 tacoma. XM and FM plays fine with no problem but then put in a CD and I get that same sound. It is starting to get annoying.

mudduck, I haven't brought mine to the dealer yet but I will on Monday. I notice if you turn down the treble to 0 then the problem goes away. You can max out the mid and bass but its the treble that causes that noise to the sub. Which is very strange

    Hi All,
I have had my 2008 Tacoma since September and just took it to the dealer to have them check the the subwoofer noise problem you have all been describing. The dealer said I had bass contol turned up too high but otherwise there was no problem. My wife brought the truck home so I was just able to test it again during the last few days. Even with the bass control set at 0, I still have exactly the same problem. I have a hard time "causing" the noise seems to occur randomly. There is definitely something wrong so I but I would like to hear suggestions from anyone else before I take it back to the dealer for the second time. All my other in-door speakers soung just fine. Is it possible the subwoofer is OK and the problem is in the JBL amp?

FYI - there are a number of Toyota customers on RAV4World.com that have issues with their JBL systems. I don't have one on my truck, but the RAV4 that my wife drives has one. It works just fine.

I would be curious to see how many different models have issues with the JBL system.
