Don't you miss the days before the feds stepped in with their emissions and fuel economy regulations?

Had something similar to this happen to me, except more recently. Headed to northern Maine late one night/early in the morning. Pushing a buck plus, all of a sudden there is a cruiser next to me, flicked his lights real quick, I let off the gas and he was gone. Don't know what he was driving but he was able to move and did.

    Part 1:

Too much emphasis has been placed on making sure people are who they say they are, and more importantly that they're as old as they say they are...

I've mentioned on TW how I get a tendency to get very "aggressive" if I get carded for anything other than entering a bar and/or buying age-restricted items.

In Doylestown, I frequent two bars. Those bars are the club/music venue where I've worked since December 2014, and an Irish bar right around the corner from the music venue where I work, and pretty much the go-to watering hole for me and my coworkers when we're not working. Obviously, when you work at a certain bar, the bouncers at that bar know who you are and know you're of age. The same goes for the bartenders, who are responsible for checking ID when the bouncers aren't on duty.

At the Irish bar, we've all been going there so long that everybody knows us. The owner of this bar absolutely loves me, and one time when I showed up for a few drinks he happened to be sitting at the bar with some friends. He stopped a new bouncer from carding me, said I was "good," and promptly bought me a cold lager draft. That said, occasionally there will be a new bouncer who doesn't know me, but I honestly can't remember the last time I got carded here. The owner, the two managers, all of the bartenders, and most of the bouncers know me.

When I go to bars out of town or out of state, I expect to get carded, and it does not bother me. I've shown my Pennsylvania driver's license to various bar employees in numerous states; California, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Virginia to name a few; I never, I repeat NEVER, had a problem! Not even in 2014 when I still had my very first driver's license with a picture from 2011 and looked much younger.

In October 2015, just two days before this happened, my best friend and I went a strip club we'd never been to before. I'd just gotten my license renewed the previous February, so I had a picture that was just 8 months old. My best friend, an Asian guy about 2½ years older than me who also has Asperger's and still looks young for his age, had last renewed his license in 2012, so his picture was more than 3 years old (a Pennsylvania driver's license is valid for 4 years, so license was less than a year from expiration). My friend handed the bouncer his license and the bouncer looked at the license, then he looked really hard at my friend. Rather gruffly, the bouncer asked "What's your address?" Taken aback by the question, and the hostility in the bouncer's tone, my friend correctly gave the address on his license and the bouncer handed it back it to him.

I handed the bouncer my license, he looked at it, and then handed it to me, thanked me, and gave me the "Okay, you're legal" nod. That's how it's always been when I've given my ID to a bouncer or bartender...

    On a side note...

I am quite chummy with the bouncers at my place of employment. They're all really great guys. I'm friends with most of them on Facebook and have the head bouncer's phone number on my phone. We're not friends in the sense that we hang out every weekend, and a couple of them find me annoying at times, but we do get together for a beer or two (or three) every now and then. The bouncers also enjoy "fucking with people," especially each other and their fellow employees. However, when it comes to doing their job, they take things very seriously.

Also, at the bar where I work, there's a big difference between the bouncers fucking with me and some random person fucking with me. All my coworkers, from my fellow barbacks, to the bartenders, to the bouncers, all the way up to the general manager, do not take kindly to people fucking with me. Part of it has to do with the fact that I have Asperger's Syndrome and don't handle things in the same way that the typical person does. A bigger part of it has to do with the fact that I am a nice guy who everybody likes, Asperger's or not, and everyone who knows me knows that I do not have a mean bone in my body. I also have a reputation for not causing trouble (at least not intentionally)...

    This works in my favor...

    Part 2:

Going back to the whole ID thing...

My cousin lived in Rhode Island briefly when her husband got a new job there. Her Pennsylvania driver's license was about to expire, and at the time she did not know she would be moving back to Pennsylvania so soon. She exchanged her PA license for a Rhode Island one, and since her out-of-state license was valid, she did not have to take any tests. She did end up spending 5 hours at the DMV though...

She held a Rhode Island license for a staggering 3 months, and during this time, she came down to visit. We went to a dive bar in Doylestown with a bunch of my friends (I forget what the occasion was; drinking with my friends and drinking with my cousin are both common occurrences; drinking with my cousin and my friends at the same time is a fairly rare one). A couple people in our group were old enough that they didn't get carded. I got carded, as did most of my friends, and the bouncer had one of those newfangled ID scanner things. We all had Pennsylvania licenses, so we got right through. The bouncer scanned my cousin's Rhode Island license and it checked out, but he still had to be sure, so he asked my cousin her address while still looking at her license. She answered correctly, got her license back, and was allowed to join us. Thankfully, my cousin is back in the Keystone State and has a Pennsylvania license once again!

The bouncers at the bar where I work are all RAMP certified, as is the GM and a couple of the bartenders. One significant part of this training is being able to spot a potential fake ID. They use a handbook showing current licenses and for all fifty states and the District of Columbia, and one even keeps a few of the fake IDs he confiscated on him as references.

I am not in any way condoning underage drinking. I am glad that the bouncers at my bar are so meticulous. However, one of the biggest things that seems to come up among everybody I know in the service industry is a fear of being busted by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). They conduct surprise inspections of bars and send undercovers in, sometimes with fake IDs. I've even heard that the LCB thugs will show up unannounced at random bars, lock the place down, and demand ID from everyone in the place.

I'd also like to point out that a good number of my friends lost their driver's licenses before they turned 21, simply for being a minor in possession and not actually driving drunk. I drank underage plenty of times, but I didn't get my license until I was 22 and I certainly never drove drunk. What would they have done, suspended my learner's permit?

However, as somebody who works in the service industry, I can understand why bouncers and bartenders are so uptight about this. They really don't want to be that way, but one slip-up could result in a huge fine, or even being shut down!

You do not want to go to that strip club, trust me! $5.75 for a lager draft, pretty sure they don't accept credit cards, and ugly strippers who supposedly have STDs...
