What rear differential oil to use?

I have a question on my 2010 tacoma there is no LSD sticker on the rearend so what oil should i use full
synthetic or regular differential oil and do i need to put in an additive? THANKS

 

No additive required in 2010. Most TW members use 75w90 synthetic.

 

my dealership in Houston uses Valvoline 75w90 synthetic. I bought it on Amazon.

 

just picked up a bunch of Redline 75w90. meets GL-5 requirements..has the friction modifier in it..which neither one of us needs.

 

What dealership is that?

OTC lube of the GL and wgt that your owners manual calls for. Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc. No boutique stuff needed.

If you follow normal service cycles and don't tow heavy or abuse the diff, dino is just fine.

If you are hard on the diff, syn could be helpful by staying 'healthier' during heat cycles.

If you are not hard on the diff, and use syn, then double your change intervals.

 

I use the same stuff. I buy it at Pep Boys but they likely sell it at any auto parts store.

FWIW I used Lucas 85w140 in the diffs. I'd seen on here it was the recommended oil by ECGS who pretty much do diffs for a living. Redline MT-90 in the Xmsn and xfercase

 

75w90 Toyota brand bought to change in my 2012. I've used Lucas in my 2003 before selling it. Both had the electric locker in the rear. Never added anything special, owners manual doesn't call for it.

 

I was reading synthetic gear oil isn’t good for our differentials. Is that true?

 

This is what I just put in my rear diff, for the same reason mentioned in the quote. I had some M1 syn laying around, so that's what went in the front. I've been using the Mobil 1 for the truck's whole life so far - 95K miles.

 

After two years of watching people here use synthetic with zero issues I’d say it’s fine. The sport model needs an LSD additive I think. Either way, can you cite what your reading that says it’s bad.

 

My truck is a 2015 sport. I am at 37,000 miles and currently going through the 30k service items. I am leaning towards doing the driveline as well even though it’s not on the schedule till 60k. I do tow a small trailer a few times through the year so I figured it wouldn’t hurt swapping the rear differential fluid. The transfer and front diff are rarely loaded but since I’m set up for it I might as well go for it. I have chosen 75-90 valvoline non synthetic for all three components. The 75w85 at Toyota was quoted by the dealer at 36 a liter. Is this a synthetic? Should I stay synthetic if it is? Not interested in brand preference just curious on what is in my truck. This truck is highway use and again occasional trailer use with a light load.

 

The Toyota is not synthetic. Changing it now may be a little preemptive. Unless you were to change them to synthetic and baseline your oils, imo it isn't necessary to change them. Especially according to your use description.


Edit: Yeah you have Dino oil in it now if it's never been changed.

 

Thanks for your opinion. I was leaning on just doing the rear diff but then got to thinking while I had a mess going to just do it all. The fluids are original and the truck has an easy life so I may just hold off till 50 or around there. On another thought why would anyone pay a premium for a gl5 non syn lube at a dealer? Mobil or valvoline full syn were 13 a qt and valvoline or Lucas non synthetic was 7. All should be gl5 rated.
