Wouldn’t a V8 option be nice?

V8 hasn't been available since 4th gen. I miss mine. Right now I have an fj. Been debating in getting a 17 or 18 dcsb or die due all the issues brought up on forum.

I think a V8 would fit, although it would certainly depend on which one. I've seen Jeep Wranglers, which don't have a huge engine compartment, with 5.7 and 6.4 liter Hemis shoved in.

I do believe, however, that if a guy were to try to make such a mod himself, it'd cost $25K or more to do it well. And if Toyota were to offer it as an option, it'd push the cost of a small truck up to well over $50K, and that'd make them economically unsustainable.

Honestly id think a small displacement hybrid would be a better option realistically. I work at a volvo dealer and their t8 is impressive. Something like that could be a beast in a truck. 400hp, nearly 500tq(2.0l turbo supercharged and hybrid 4 cyl), insta power from supercharger and electric, oh and their 5000pound xc90 gets 54mpge when charged. Oh plus federal tax credits and the ability to run much bigger inverter.

Im a motorhead through and through but if you dont see the potential of electric you are blind.

I just don't see the "tidal wave" showing up in the sales numbers. Not reflected in significant decreases in Tacoma sales or increases in Tundra sales.

If that happened I'd be all over the single cab diesel with the flat bed.

That’s not the way it’s going. The trend is smaller engines with boost. Look at the successful 3.5 V6 eco boost that is currently in the f-150. Manufactures are keeping their average MPG across all models up. Bad news is that engines aren’t going to last as long and cost the consumer a lot more to repair.

I might be wrong but wondered if Toyota can’t put a supercharger on the 3.5 “Atkinson” engine because that would make it a “Miller” cycle and it’s patented by Mazda. Could very well be wrong.

Why not just invest the $35-40k in something they like how it drives right off the lot in the first place?

Toyota provides the selection, customers makes the choice yet we blame Toyota because people choose to buy things they're unhappy with and bitch because they spend more money to try and make it "right".

I don't get this line of reasoning, Toyota didn't make them choose Tacoma.

That would be BA if they brought the Hilux to the US

Supercharger or turbo would definitely be an option as well, but Toyota would still need to address the drivetrain control by the ECU

Why do you say that? What makes the Hilux superior to the Taco in the NA market?

I've been telling Toyota for years I want a diesel and it's gotten jack shit. I'd buy a diesel Hilux but I'm pretty much standing pat otherwise.

    Toyota's sneaky way of upselling.

    Step 1: Sell an under-powered, over-priced 3rd Gen Tacoma.

Step 2: Wait 'til the customer is fed up and comes back.

Step 3: Low ball customer on trade in value.

Step 4: Sell customer an overpriced Tundra.

Step 5: Put slightly used, overpriced, and under-powered Tacoma on lot.

Step 6: Sit back and wait.

Reads to me like foolish buyer not unsavory selling tactics as a smart buyer knows his needs then buys Tundra to begin with. It's not like they're hiding Tundras.

What makes it superior in any market? It's a simpler truck, more utilitarian. I think Toyota would do fine selling both such as they do in Mexico. They could offer only regular and Access cabs, tray-back, base model or limited option Hilux and drop the SR Tacoma completely. I don't need all the convenience features, most of which I'm taking out of my TRD OR. I've even sourcing parts to convert it to crank windows.

There is more than enough power in the 3.5L but the drive train is complete trash and honestly my only complaint about my truck. I would be more than happy if they fixed that one issue. It would also be nice to have other engine and drivetrain options whether or not it’s a turbo or supercharged engine, diesel or V8. And let’s be honest, people are buying Toyota’s because of their reputation and ignoring critics who honestly identified the issue well in advance. If I remember right, the drive train was the biggest issue identified. The other issues were things like the interior not being refined and the seating position. Toyota usually does redesigns every 5 years, but the 2nd gen went 10 years due to the popularity of the platform. I don’t see that happening with the 3rd gen, but then again if the sales keep up then I could be wrong. Again we are all just spit balling and really have no idea

Maybe for fleet sales but the SR seems to be filling that niche already.

So we have 4 different SUV and now 3 different models of trucks to choose from? How big do the dealerships need to be?

I guess it would be nice to order one for delivery to the US if that's what you really want.
