The winch hight in the garage is not the problem. The problem is my garage door opening is only 6'6" tall and my truck sits at 6'1". With the tent on top it's over 7" tall.

    You are correct.

So after talking to a few welders in my area we've come up with this idea to load and unloading the RTT. The hoist will be bought from Harbor Freight and welded to a 2" square poll. That will then slide into a poll buried in the ground at ground level so it can be removed when not in use and so my HOA doesn't have a fit.

Considered a bearing in the middle, and another 90 near the bottom? Slide it in the receiver hitch, Hoist and Pivot and place on the ground.

    IMG_3553.jpg

Edit, that Hoist already swivels, so just make a receiver mount.

Thats would be perfect if it could rotate. But thats the basic idea of the one I'm going to have built.

Do you know if that's custom made or something you can buy?

That one was custom. Was for sale around here over a year ago when I saved that pic.

The HF Hoist does swivel already. Just needs a raised base.

Yeah, thats the plan. If you look at my drawing you'll see the HF hoist on the top part of the poll.

I haven't read much of this thread, but why the sale? I have an RTT, and I'm interested to see why you are changing your setup

For me the main reason was my dog. He's 85 lbs and not getting up that ladder, and I was hoping he'd sleep in the cab jut fine. He whines, so instead I had to pitch the annex every time and I didn't want to deal with that. Also it was up on top of my camper shell, which caused massive drag and I felt pretty top heavy on the trails. Also also the set-up and tear down wasn't as easy as I was hoping it to be, and once it was pitched I wasn't going anywhere. It was cool, but just didn't work well for me. Luckily I was able to sell it for $1200 and I bought it for $1199. Talk about a profit!

How hard are you guys wheeling with your tent ? I have mine on my bed rack, and have wheeled a moderate amount with it on. For the most part it seems legit ! That factory mounting system sucks on the round bed rack bars though, the metal
Plates bend so easy, I'm scared it will launch off on fast sections in the desert, which is primarily what I do lol

Use exhaust clamps instead of the flat metal plates.

Ya I've debated this quite a bit. It suck for base camping. Except for easy deploying and folding, everything else is a drawback from ground tents. Thanks for the feedback on your experiences

Apparently not as hard a you. The dirt roads that I mob down do nothing to my tent or the mounting system. I built my own bed bars and used the factory tepui plates and bolts. :notsure:

Yeah that's my thoughts as well, and since it costs so damn much, I better love this thing. The pros just didn't outweigh the cons enough to justify the price tag.

    Stuff. Also things.
I just got back from a week in Moab with my RTT. It did just fine on the fast two-track sections of the Kokopelli, as well as the technical crawling sections like Rose Garden Hill in the picture below.

The key for me was lowering the rack height. I used to have mine about even with the cab, so it made things really iffy in a lot of ways. Between the increased CG, less rack upright stiffness due to the increased length, and the drag, it was a no-brainer to reduce the height.

As for the mounting, make damn sure that you use quality hardware to mount the rails to the floor, including real nylock nuts. I threw away the corny bar stock brackets for mounting to the rack almost immediately and went with the exhaust brackets. They have done great for me, but my next improvement is going to be welding beefy light bar tabs to the bed rack and then going straight from the tent floor rails to those. That way it’s even beefier and I have the side benefit of having the RTT-to-rack hardware up and out of the way instead of the exhaust brackets, nuts, and exposed bolt threads hanging down past the rack tubes.
