    Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and to the Tacoma. I have decided to buy a truck and have long since ruled out the Colorado and Frontier.

Right now the Toyota dealer has a 2014 SR5 V6 Auto with an aftermarket canopy for $33k (asking) 27-29k black book value. Truck has some scratches on the sides and tail gate and has a few windshield chips. It looks like it was a work truck.
    https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/nvn/ctd/d/2015-toyota-tacoma-trd/6362670234.html

Another dealership has a 2015 TRD Sport V6 Auto for $37k (asking) $33-35k black book value.
    https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/nvn/ctd/d/2015-toyota-tacoma-trd/6362670234.html

Or I can go new TRD Off Road for $43k before negotiation.

My questions to the collective are:
Is the difference in price worth it or should I go new?
Is the 3rd generation as reliable and durable as the 2nd generation?
How much are the Canadian/ British Columbia dealers willing to move on the list price?
    Should I keep looking?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I got a 2014 w/ less than 35k miles for 27k excellent condition from private party. Honestly if you’re patient and comfortable doing that then I’d say it’s worth it. Certified pre-owned dealers will still try to jip you just like regular dealers. Just run a car fax history report and get a mechanic to do a look over if you go that route

Those prices are what I see here on the east coast of Canada for used Tacoma's. I'd buy new, but that's just me. When I'm that close to the price of a new truck for an almost 3 year old truck of a previous generation it only makes sense to me to buy new. You're talking 6 grand for a new truck with bumper to bumper warranty for 3 years. who knows how that used Tacoma was treated, if saving a lot of money that's a chance I'd take, but not for 6k savings. My$0.02

I've been leaning toward a new truck. The trouble is my budget is about $30k plus a not too valuable trade in.

I guess ramen noodles for a year of dinners isn't too much of a sacrifice for a new taco.

Those quotes you listed in your first post were too high. FYI those were most likely the sticker prices of those trucks when they were brand new a couple years ago. I would go with the Ramen noodle idea and buy new...

I would go with the TRD Sport just because I like paint matched everything and I loath chrome.

If you go with the work truck though, make them replace the windshield before you buy it.

I paid 28K for a 2013 brand new when I got mine, could have gotten 4x4 had I needed it for just under 30k. Those prices are ridiculous for used in my opinion.

He's from Canada, so the prices he's listing are NOT US dollars.

looks like the same link ?

I recently got the 2015 TRD ( same color as the one in the link ) and it had just over 51k for $24k. Not happy about spending this much on a truck and having payments again, but what can you do. for the short time I have been on this site, and kinda new this already going in....but these trucks will last a long time.

Exactly, that always seems to get missed in the comments.

Toyota's have crazy resale, I saw a used 2017 4runner sr5 sell for more (3k) than I paid for my trail premium brand new (2016).
    People are crazy, buy new!

Not if you keep going into debt to buy cars.

Debt is a choice. If you don't want car payments, don't have them.

Plenty of First Gens out there for a good value.

I would not spend 33k on a vehicle with scratches in the paint and hips in the windshield.

If their hips are in the windshield, they must have some serious kama sutra going on inside

Few months ago I bought my 2014 v6 auto Texas edition with just over 15k miles for $25,350. It was a great deal but now want to trade it in or sell it because I want a 4x4.
Tacoma’s keep their value, they don’t shoot down in price when a new body style comes out, so I’d just buy new. That’s what I’m doing...

If you have a friend in the car business, maybe you could make a deal to have them get a Taco for you at the local dealer auction. Car guys have a good eye, they can see more than you about a car with just a glance. And also, the auction has a disclosure system for cars with problems. I had my car buddy get my 14 taco, and saved considerably.
