I wouldn't hold your breathe on using your existing tanks for the house. I have a very large propane tank for the house as well, and I asked about putting a pigtail for the BBQ and generator off that tank but the FD was not having it. They apparently don't like having removable accessories run off of the house tank. If you build in the generator, like put it in an enclosure and have it be it's own 'fixture', I'm sure you could make it fly. I wanted mine to stay mobile and quick connect which is where I got the push back.

Also, remember, once you buy a generator, you won't lose power anymore... That's what happened to me. I lost power several times in a year when I first bought my house. I bought a generator and haven't lost power for more than a few hours since then.

If that's what it takes, to not lose power anymore, then I'll do it right now!!!!!!!!!

And I guess it makes sense about not being able to use the existing tanks... I guess.

I noticed some 6000 watt units for under $1000. I have a 200 lb propane tank behind the house for a fireplace insert in my office that I rarely use. Looks like I'd get quite a bit of run time off of that.

I'll be my first winter in this house, so I'll have to see how power outages go. I suspect I won't have much of an issue because of how close I am to the main road.

 

I have a 4000W surge (3500W run) generator (propane) and I got it for like $350 from Home Depot. According to the info that came with it, it will run for 12-14 hours off of a 20 lb propane tank at 50% load.

 

Today will probably be a bad day to shop for a gen in CT... LOL

 

LOL. Hell yeah it will. Going to have to wait a while, for things to go back to normal, and then look into it.

 

Just pick up one of these bad boys and a couple 5 gallon jugs for gas. You shouldn't have to worry about gas sitting around with the amount of lawn mowing you do.

Wife took the day off so she could take her dad to the airport... he's going to FL to look at a house to buy, to rent out. They already have one and are looking to buy another. Their niece is a real estate agent down there, so she's always looking for them. It's in Palm Coast FL.

She went back home to pack up stuff for later, and said it looks like they already fixed the power line. Hope she's right! Said there is a line down though, small black wire... thinking that's the phone line, which we already called the phone company to go out and fix. Said Wednesday to get fixed.

I turned off all of my breakers last night, at the recommendation of the Fire Department. I called the cops to let them know about the line being down, just in case. The Fire Department showed up at around 1, to check it out, knocked on my door to make sure everything inside was OK, and said it would be a good idea to do it, just in case. Never thought about that to be honest, but makes perfect sense. Don't want the power jolt to come through and fuck shit up if it's all on. Guess I'll stop by after work... turn on the main breaker, and then the smaller breakers one by one.
