What antivirus program is best?

Just reinstalled my computer because it was running so slow from a bunch of crap. I want to know which antivirus software is the best for Windows? I want to be sure I am free of spyware and any other threats.

 

Kaspersky Internet Security....

 

For a free one...Avast, hands down.

I'd go with AVG Free edition. You can pay for more, but this pretty much has you covered. I've had Norton/Symantec but AVG seems to be plenty adequate and free. Now I run Macs instead of PCs so I need none...

 

Ive run norton products for almost 5 years now and yet to have any issues and i download alot of files and music from limewire and other not so legit sites.
jeez i hope the feds aren't monitoring this site

For free options I would suggest Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG9 or Avast.

 

Lol I know.. Macs rule.

Of the 3 I see more people mentioning AVG or Avast. What is better? I really want something that can help me from reinstalling my computer every year or so.

 

AVG is the choice.

 

if you have a high speed internet provider check and see if they offer one for free. if not and yuo want free Avast or AVG they have differant fetures and offer good basic protection. if you want to spend $$ i recomned you look at the security forums here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/security

 

Believe it or not, Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the best rated programs at virus detection and weeding out false positives. It consumes far fewer resources than AVG (which is a resource hog), and has a much better detection rate than Avast.

Google it, its a a pretty slick (and free) program for being a MS product.

 

I use McAfee. It along with Symantec is free for home use off the DOD portal.
Also have used Trend, AVG, AVAST on occasion.

 

I liked Webroot when I had my windows computer.

Microsoft Security Essentials, scored well in Max PC AV shootout in this months issue. I have used this since Win7 came out and have had no problems whatsoever.

 

I use AVG free on all my machines. Works great.

I used to run Nortons but it was $50 to renew the subscription and it was a huge resource/memory hog. I like AVG much better.

Running AVG + (Adaware & Spybot S&d about once a month) + C-Cleaner keeps my machines running pretty smooth.
