Re-gearing my Tacoma......4.10 or 4.56?

    Didn't know 4.30's were available now... that would be awesome for a 2nd gen 6speed on 35's...
    The 4.56's work very well for wheeling, the issue is the Hwy RPM's. They just take you a bit too high and for long distances and it is indeed bothersome. (at least for me)
    I'd consider 4.30's to be the perfect ratio for my application. 4.10's being the only other ratio available I believed they would work well for me due to the crawlbox mod - without that 4.10's would suck for wheeling.

    Just talked to a tech at ECGS and he did confirm that they do make a 4.30 for 2nd gen Tacoma’s but advised me not to waste my money with the 4.30 and go with a 4.56 regardless if I go with a 32” or 33” E rated tire.

    I have to say I was a little surprised I thought for sure he was going to say 4.30 was the sweet spot but instead recommended 4.56.

    Any opinions out there?

    For an auto trans maybe. I'll probably still go with 4.10 for mine. I drive a lot of long distances and have a 45 min commute to work. I just want back what I lost going to 33s. This is my DD

    Homer just said RPMs are too high on the highway with 35s and 4.56 gears. How do you think it's going to be with 32s?

    And I won't be doing any regearing until I'm ready to put in lockers. My truck is heavy and I tow frequently in the mountains. It still works fine. It's a bit more of a dog than I'd like, but certainly tolerable.

    Keep in mind, manuals will turn higher RPM due to the higher final drive ratio.

    Usually I'm in the 75-85 range @2200-2500ish hahaha!

    Yeah it actually probably is too low. It's kinda of weird that t's so low considering that my tires are only an inch or so bigger than stock, and only weigh 45lbs (C-load KO2's). I would rather be geared slightly too high than too low though once I have my new suspension/tire setup by next summer, because I do ALOT of highway driving above 75mph and that's not going to change. So, I will probably end up with 4.10

    I recently installed ECGS 4.56 on my 2012 auto with 33s. I love them.

    5th gear: 2575rpm at 75mph (not towing, converter locked)
    5th gear: 2432rpm at 65mph (not towing, converter locked)
    4th gear: 3446rpm at 70mph (towing 2000lb trailer, converter locked)

    I don't think 4.10s would be enough, 4.88s a bit steep maybe. I should have done it sooner, it's so much more enjoyable to drive. The biggest difference is the transmission doesn't downshift at the slightest stupid incline and the converter just stays locked. It pulls like a train. The whole truck just feels...grateful.

    I have the same setup and agree how much smoother the truck is. The truck can handle hills again without the transmission getting crazy.

    Im glad i waited on my purchase, i was getting 4.56 from ECGS for my TRD OR 4x4 6speed manual trans, i just found out they now have 4.30 gears front and rear, i think this gear ration is perfect for 33s or 35s with manual trans. what do you guys think?

    This is my plan too. A few weeks ago made the appointment with ECG to regear to 4.56 (they made no mention of 4.3). They pointed out that the 4.56 would only be 300 extra rpm over the 4.10... running 265/75/16 tires.

    I will be towing a very light trailer, approx 3500# fully loaded, mostly out west in mountains.
    However, may switch to a heavier trailer, approx 5000#, after a bit.

    How heavy are your trailers?

    My trailer is about 5,000 to 5,500 lbs loaded. Stock gearing and 265/75/16. I'm 90% sure I'll be regearing before going up to 255s.

    If I go with a 265/75/16 heavier tire (Coopper STT Pro) I’ll probably regear to 4.30. I don’t haul a trailer but I do carry lots of gear and passengers when I go off roading :)
