what do i need to know?

i have a 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium with Eyesight that i just really don't enjoy. the CVT wears on me and the driver's seat is quite uncomfortable after about 30 minutes or so.

i surf, snowboard, mountain bike and golf so it will be nice to have a bed instead of dirtying the inside of the Forester and putting the seats down all the time.

i definitely want 4x4. and i was thinking base just to limit how bad i get hosed.

i was just quoted the following for an SR with MT:

    $24,456-Sale Price
    $2,048.19-Sales Tax @8.375%
    $205-est DMV
    $75 doc fee

$26,784.19 - Total out the door

but i have heard that the base models are fairly awful and it makes sense to get a TRD Sport at the very least and that the base won't hold its value and in the long run is a "bad buy".

any thoughts on price, which model and the idea in general?

    thanks all!

The base has been a best buy for me but get what you want and welcome to TW!

The TRD packages are great, but your not getting out the door for anything close to that price I'd imagine.

Do you tow? If not a lot or often, and don't need back seats for big folks, the 4 cylinder, 5 speed access cab will do you well.

    Too few to list.
Lots of people here with the SR and completely happy with it. Can't go wrong with MT 4x4. If no convenience package, aftermarket alarm will benefit you most because keying the door every time you get in gets old quick. SR5 is a good buy between the trims.

    Who told you this?

Regardless, it’s not really based in fact. The SR is pretty well equipped for a base model, especially if you get the convenience package. The 2.7L isn’t a rocket but adequate, and the 5spd is a great transmission. They hold their value just as well as the higher models as a % of purchase price. Not to mention you have a drivetrain of proven durability, reliability, and availability of parts.

If the price you posted is for a utility package, it’s an average deal. If that’s for convenience package, that’s a great deal.

All told, you won’t find many SR 4x4 5spd owners who don’t love their trucks.

Get what you can afford. One of my first vehicles was a base 2WD, single cab, MT Toyota truck, before there ever was a Tacoma. That thing was a blast!

Also the 5 speed Taco will not be made after 2017.

What does that even mean? Source?

Sounds like salesman upselling jibberish to me.

For best value, buy the least vehicle that will meet your usage goals, even if it's a used one. The only magic in new is the smell driving it off the lot, unless you are a long term buyer. You know, like 10-20 years. At that point, on non specialty vehicles like Tacomas, neither the year nor the model will make more than a few hundred bucks difference from one to another.

But here's a tip. Take an over 30 minute test ride. Tacoma seats don't exactly meet La Z Boy guidelines either. Depending on the shape of your body, it may or may not be comfortable for you.

I downgraded from a TRD OR 4x4 to an SR 4 cylinder 5 speed 4x4 and I love my truck and have no regrets. I’ve had plenty of loaded vehicles and I just love the simplicity of this truck!

Tacomas hold their value extremely well, drive one of each and see what you like. For me the seats in the sr5 were uncomfortable and i liked the fact of buying the off-road and not having to upgrade anything right away.

For 3rd gens, the seats in the sr5 and off-road are the same except for the covering and color.

I have a 2nd gen trdor, but if I do it again I'm just getting SR, maybe sr5. There's better Lockers and suspension than what come on the offroad. The only downside I could see would be to not have crawl control, but that's for nerds anyways

OP have you looked in the used lots? I'm already seeing a few third gens pop up in used lots. Might be a good way to get into a TRD and still be at a good price point

You got some bad info to say the least. I purchased the SR Access Cab with 2.7L - 5 spd manual - 4x4 because it's exactly what I wanted. Could of had any model but I prefer the simplicity/dependability of the SR and it does what I want. I'm sure when/if I sell I won't take a hit.
